At this late stage in the leadup to the next console generation, the big question of how much the PlayStation 5 will cost remains unanswered. With only a few months to go before the console is supposed to launch, more and more people have been taking their stabs at guessing the PS5’s price, and now a business expert has weighed in with his own prediction.

Speculation over that elusive price tag has been happening for a while now, but things have ramped up considerably now that Microsoft has officially announced how much the Xbox Series X and Series S will cost. Overall, the $299-$499 price range of the Xbox Series is lower than many were expecting, and as a result, it’s been reported that Sony has slashed the PS5’s price in response.

If a new Bloomberg report is to be believed, it looks like Sony won’t be offering any version of the PS5 for as low as the Xbox Series S, but it might undersell the Xbox Series X. According to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Masahiro Wakasugi, the standard model could be priced as low as $449, while the disc drive-less Digital Edition could come in below $400.

Most would agree that that would be an improvement compared to recent rumors placing the two PS5 models’ prices in the $500-$600 range, but it might not be good news for Sony. It’s worth noting the rumors that the Xbox Series will be selling at a loss, even with the Series X costing $499. If Wakasugi’s prediction of an even lower price point for the PS5 turns out to be accurate, it’ll likely mean Sony intends to follow suit and sell its console at a loss in order to avoid losing ground to Microsoft’s aggressive pricing.

Then again, whatever the PS5 costs at launch might not matter much for a lot of interested fans, as it’s very likely that they won’t be able to get their hands on the console any time soon. It’s long been suspected that the current global situation would result in the PS5 being in short supply at launch, and the Bloomberg report supports that, claiming that Sony will only be able to produce 11 million consoles this fiscal year due to low production yields.

Needless to say, it’s been an interesting year so far, and an interesting end to the current console generation, but fans are getting tired of trying to guess how much the PS5 will cost or what date it will launch on, especially now that all that information has been revealed for the Xbox Series. Here’s hoping Wednesday’s PS5 Showcase will have something to reveal amid all of the planned game announcements.
