Sony’s PlayStation 5 console could possibly be getting a temporary price cut for a limited time. The PS5 console has been through a rather interesting history ever since its launch in 2020, containing a prolific library of games that make it a hot commodity for gamers. It also was a hard-to-obtain console due to a variety of factors, with the COVID-19 pandemic also exasperating it. In recent years, the stock and price of the PS5 console have been stabilized, though it is now a bit higher than what it initially sold for in some regions.

While the price of the console has increased, it hasn't hurt the demand or sales of the PS5 too much, according to a report from Sony in 2022. This has been reflected in the sales of the console itself, where it sold 38 million units by the end of April 2023, which was one of the console's best years on the market according to Sony. The company was looking to sell more consoles this year as well, and this reported price cut could help move the needle.

This report comes from a reliable data miner known as Billbil-kun, who has had an accurate track record regarding early release information for PlayStation games, which include the monthly PlayStation Plus titles. This prolific leaker has claimed that a recent promotional campaign will see temporary discounts on the PS5 console after being applied in Spain, Portugal, and France. This discount will be coming to Germany, the UK, and the United States, according to Billbil-kun.

How much is the discount?

ps5 and dualsense controller
  • Germany: €75 reduction (€474.99 instead of €549.99)
  • United States: $50 reduction ($449.99 instead of $499.99)
  • Great Britain: £75 reduction(£405 instead of £480)

According to Billbil-kun, these reductions for the PS5 console will be valid at certain retailers, including the official PlayStation Store, along with storefronts like Amazon, MediaMarkt, Target, and Game. There was no word on when these discounts will be coming.

Sony cited the global economic environment as the reason why the prices have been raised, with the PS5's price being adjusted in Europe, Japan, and parts of North America, though the US hasn't been hit with it yet. Rival company Xbox had also announced that it would be increasing the price of its console and Xbox Game Pass subscription service to reflect the current economic demands and conditions. The PS5 would likely benefit from a limited-time discount, as it could be enticing enough for gamers on the fence about the console to make the purchase.
