The PlayStation 5 gets a new firmware update on October 12, and beyond the usual, "this system software update improves system performance" message that users see upon installing a new update, this one seems to be addressing a long-time concern of PS5 users. Even more surprising, this update comes just a week after another update was put out for the console, which also, unsurprisingly, just listed "improved system performance" as the changes made to the console. This new one, though, is quite a bit more substantial.
PS5 update version 22.02-06.02.00 is available to download and install around the globe now. The PS5 has seen several firmware updates in an effort to improve functionality and user experience. While few of them have been substantial and the PS5 still remains relatively similar to its launch back in November 2020, this new update does bring some nice quality of life changes to the user interface and a significant change to the way trophies are viewable.
There are two significant improvements in this new update. The first is a change to the Activity Cards that have been a part of the user experience since launch. Before the newest update, a large horizontal list would appear when the activity cards were accessed, which was slightly clunky and took longer than necessary for users to access what they needed. The Activity Card feature was designed to allow players quick access to specific features or locations within games themselves, therefore saving time and avoiding loading screens. Now, all the game's activities that you are currently playing are listed in a vertical list and are grouped together based on their intended function or game mode. The PS5 activity card feature had previously been underutilized, so hopefully, this new update will give users a better experience.
The second change in this update is focused on visibility and accessibility of the PlayStation Trophy feature, which previously saw an update to the PS5 which allowed players to reveal all hidden trophies in games. Now, when users select the Trophy icon on the interface while a game is open, all the trophies for the game will be displayed in a vertical column. Before the update, players would have to view trophies from the Trophy Tracker menu and then find a different menu to see the trophies for a specific game.
These updates are nice, for sure, but the PS5 still has a ways to go in terms of interface. There are still no available themes and some other features that were available on the PS4. With the rumor that the PS5 will integrate with Discord in the future, it does appear like the PlayStation 5 is on the right track to improve its user experience.
