A recent Reddit survey indicates that many hardcore PlayStation 5 fans will take a day off of work when the console launches in their countries. Although the study is by no means scientific, it suggests that pre-release hype for the PlayStation 5 is reaching a fever pitch.

The PlayStation 5 will launch on November 12th in most regions, with a delayed release on November 19th in Europe and the United Kingdom. A number of factors contribute to excitement regarding the console's launch. The console promises to drastically cut or eliminate load times, letting fans jump straight into new games. In addition to highly-anticipated launch titles like Spider Man: Miles Morales, the console itself comes pre-loaded with Astro's Playroom, which will show off the new DualSense controller.

Posted on the r/PS5 subreddit, the post asks whether new PS5 owners will take a vacation day, use a sick day, or simply go to work when the PS5 first comes out. Over 66 percent of those who responded to the poll said they were going to take a day off when their pre-ordered PS5 arrived. Around 32 percent said they would be working that day, but only 2 percent said they would take a sick day. Perhaps the PlayStation 5's glowing reviews have convinced some fans to take a last-minute absence in the form of a sick leave.

There are a few factors that suggest these numbers are skewed in factor of taking the day off. For one, people following the PS5 subreddit likely have very strong feelings about their new console. For another, many people either choosing to work or take a sick day could be too embarrassed to disclose that information in the comments. Finally, the chaotic PlayStation 5 pre-ordering process left many fans without a pre-order. Anyone answering this post must have obtained a pre-order, meaning that they are unusually persistent or lucky (or both) in trying to obtain a console, and are not representative of most fans.

It's also important to keep in mind that these results may be impacted by the pandemic. The United Kingdom's new lockdown, as well as a surge in COVID-19 cases across the United States, may make the process of acquiring a console very time-intensive. For that reason, many fans may now take the day off when they would otherwise have gone in to work. This could inflate numbers as compared to those collected under different circumstances.

Thankfully, those who have not yet claimed a next-gen console will have a chance in the coming weeks, especially on Black Friday. GameStop will offer PS5s and Xbox Series consoles in-store only, while Best Buy will offer them online only. Between these options, gamers will hopefully be able to get their console of choice in the next few months, joining those who already have pre-orders.
