Players all around the world are eager to hear news from Sony regarding the next generation of PlayStation consoles – namely the PS5 reveal. This eagerness is only exacerbated by the somewhat disappointing, yet entirely appropriate delay to the PS5 reveal event.

While PlayStation fans wait with anticipation for the reveal of next generation titles and a look at what the physical design of the PS5, the developers are much more interested in how the system performs. Recently, one developer on an online forum claiming to have seen the hardware in action says that the PS5’s I/O speed is “on a whole other level” when compared to what’s come before.

In terms of the next generation hardware like the Xbox Series X and the PS5,  when talking about I/O and SSD’s it is usually referring to the speed at which that hardware is able to process information. A lot of this information was discussed in Sony’s "Road to PS5" presentation with Mark Cerny, where he said the PS5’s SSD will make load speeds 100 times faster than loading times of last gen hardware.

However, many players found the ‘Road to PS5’ presentation a little too dense and hands-off, leading many of us still unsure of how the PS5 will actually perform. While players will likely see the system in action sooner rather than later according to a potential PS5 reveal event date leak, as of right now players are having a hard time grasping just how much faster the system will be compared to current gen hardware. Now, one developer on the ResetEra forums is trying to assuage those fears by claiming he has seen the PS5 in action and it is undeniably a huge upgrade from the last generation.

Industry developer Matt on the ResetEra forums took to a forum discussing whether or not the next generation hardware’s SSD’s will really change the gaming landscape. Matt confirmed he had seen both system’s in action and that the Series X’s SSD was impressive and a huge upgrade from the Xbox One’s. However, when talking about the PS5’s SSD and IO he said it was “on a whole other level.” Comparing the Series X’s IO and the PS5 he said, “…in comparison, the PS5’s IO feels like it was taken from an IO-focused mid-gen upgrade 4 years from now.” Claims like these certainly make the idea of next gen hardware ushering in a post-console generation seem all the more likely.

While Sony fans have really only seen the PS5’s DualSense controller in terms of the actual hardware, it’s reassuring to know the console packs a punch. Matt would go on to clarify that the Xbox Series X’s SSD is impressive in its own right, but it can’t really be compared to what Sony has in the PS5. “It does basically everything significantly faster than any competition in the consumer space. It is easily and by far the largest difference between the two next gen consoles.”

The PS5 is expected to launch this holiday season.
