A PS5 gamer has recently been able to purchase a PlayStation VR2 at Walmart with a massive discount due to a problem with the device’s box. The PSVR2 is Sony’s latest VR headset, and this lucky gamer purchased it at one of the lowest possible prices ever for a completely new unit.

The PlayStation VR2 was originally released in February 2023. The virtual reality headset is the successor to the original PSVR, and included launch titles such as Gran Turismo 7, Jurassic World Aftermath, No Man’s Sky, Resident Evil Village, and others.

Popular VR Game 'Can't Justify' PlayStation VR2 Release

The developer of a popular VR sandbox game confirms that the studio "can't justify" releasing a port for the PlayStation VR2 headset.

Now, a lucky PS5 gamer called Sufficient_Lion7013 has been able to purchase the PlayStation VR2 for only $308 at Walmart, down from an original price of $549. According to Sufficient_Lion7013, someone at Walmart accidentally cut the top of the device’s box, which “damaged” the goods enough to warrant a discount, but not enough to damage the actual headset. In the post’s comments, many gamers were surprised by this bargain, claiming they would easily purchase the headset with this discount, but not all of them were willing to pay the full price.

Sony Is Seriously Struggling To Sell The PSVR2

Unfortunately, the PlayStation VR has been struggling to sell since its launch. While the original PSVR sold over a million units in less than a year in 2016, the new hardware is failing to achieve the same amount of success.

Sony even reportedly halted the production of the PSVR2, as there are many unsold units in the market right now. Despite being well-received by reviewers, Sony’s headset has a steep price tag of $550, and some gamers complain that the platform currently lacks enough big exclusive games to warrant a purchase.

Sony is aware of these difficulties, though, and it seems that the company is already working to expand the sales of its VR headset and ensure the hardware’s longevity. For instance, it was reported a few months ago that Sony was exploring the idea of bringing the PSVR2 to PC users. This would potentially expand the user base apart from PS5 owners, which could help in sales. Apart from that, Sony is also trying to bring more games to PlayStation VR2, such as Metro Awakening, Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate, Zombie Army VR, and Soul Covenant. Hopefully, this will make the device more popular than it currently is, but it’s still too early to tell whether Sony’s new plans will be enough to make the PSVR2 as successful as its predecessor.
