With the PlayStation 5 now being fully released to the public, there are many features that players have access to with both the console and its unique controller. The PlayStation 5's DualSense controller has many little features to enhance players' gaming experiences, one of which being the built-in microphone that is always turned on by default.
Having a microphone built into the controller can be helpful for many players who don't have or don't want to plug a headset into their controller or console. Others, however, may not want every single thing they say to be heard over in their games' chats.
Luckily for those who don't want to be heard, there is a way to mute the microphone built in the PS5's controller. It doesn't require any menu navigation, as the solution is built into the controller itself.
One of the easiest ways to mute one's microphone can be found by pressing the horizontal button below the PlayStation logo button on the controller. Below this horizontal button is a small decal that displays a muted microphone symbol. This button will mute the microphone built into the controller, but it will also reset every time either the controller or console is turned off.
In order to keep the microphone muted by default, players will need to go into their console's menus. By heading into the PlayStation 5's system settings, players can find the sound menu. Players will then need to find the microphone settings in this menu. Those wanting to mute their microphone by default will need to look for "Microphone Status When Logging In," and interested players can then set it to mute so that it will be not be active when the controller turns on by default.
These options should help those who want to feel more secure in their privacy, as well as players who don't want to be heard by other players in-game. While some may not like that the controller's microphone is always active by default, others may prefer the ease of access when hopping into various online games.
This feature of the PS5's controller may be used in other games thanks to the microphone being built into games with and without online content. With voice recognition being present in video games for decades, there is a good chance that this feature could be used by developers in interesting ways, such as the audio recognition seen in Alien: Isolation back in 2014.
