Compared to the Xbox One, the PS4 had more noteworthy exclusives. That does not mean they were all great. Sony too had its fair share of critical flops. The system really didn't come into its stride, in terms of internally developed games, until a couple years in.

That's usually the case for new systems. That said the past few years have been golden and there has never been a better time to get a PS4, even with the PS5 on the horizon. Speaking of the PS5, in honor of that coming out soon, let's go back and take a look at some of the PS4's earlier exclusives and other third-party games that never got sequels.

10 Killzone: Shadowfall

guerrilla games killzone website shut down

Killzone: Shadowfall was a launch game that coincided with the PS4’s release. Since then the developer, Guerrilla Games, put out Horizon: Zero Dawn in 2017. For some context, Killzone began on the PS2 in 2004.

With the okay press of Shadowfall and longevity of the series getting old by 2013, it seemed fans were ready to embrace a new IP more with Horizon. Needless to say that will be Guerrilla’s next venture.

9 Driveclub

1 Driveclub

Driveclub released in 2014 as an exclusive to the PS4. This sort of went against the norm as the PlayStation franchise had always promoted Gran Turismo as its premiere racing game of choice.

That aside, the game did well enough at launch, but in 2016 Sony shut down the developers, Evolution Studios, who later went on to  join Codemasters. They helped put out Onrush in 2018. As for Driveclub’s legacy, the online servers were shut down this past March.

8 inFAMOUS: Second Son

ps4 exclusives history

inFAMOUS: Second Son launched in 2014 with its DLC, First Light, also releasing a little later on. Sucker Punch, the developer, began this series on the PS3 in 2009 with two games and a stand-alone DLC game focusing on a what if, vampire scenario.

Since Second Son’s launch, the team has been hard at work on Ghost of Tsushima, which is due out in July. It’s hard to say then if inFAMOUS is truly gone. It all depends on their new game’s success.

7 The Order: 1886

4 The Order 1886

The Order: 1886 released in 2015. It received middling to low feedback with the visuals praised but the gameplay feeling too much like a last-gen experience.

The developer, Ready at Dawn, has since put out some smaller games. None of them were PS4 exclusives. In fact, they also started making VR games and none of them have come out for the PSVR. It might be safe to say them that there might be bad blood between them and Sony in regard to this release.

6 Bloodborne

5 Bloodborne

Bloodborne launched in 2015 with its DLC releasing at the end of that year. Since this came out, FromSoftware has put out Dark Souls III with the help of Bandai Namco and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in collaboration with Activision.

Last year another Bandai Namco joint effort was announced, Elden Ring, which presumably will be out sometime soon. While Sony does not need FromSoftware to make a sequel as they own the IP, it might be foolish to do so without them.

5 Grand Theft Auto V

6 Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V released in 2013, the same year as the PS4 and Xbox One debuted. While the game did get ported to these consoles a year later, there was no new version for the generation unlike previous years.

The PS2, for example, got three games. Rockstar did put out Red Dead Redemption II so they weren’t completely gone from this generation. The reason for the delay could be because of that along with their continued support for Grand Theft Auto V’s online mode which is still raking in the dough.

4 Ratchet And Clank (2016)

7 Ratchet 2016

Ratchet and Clank was rebooted in 2016 to coincide with the release of its first movie. While the film did little to wow audiences, the game was well respected amongst fans and reviewers.

Sadly it never got a sequel. That said Insomniac Games did put out Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018 and were bought by Sony in 2019. A sequel is not out of the question but presumably a Spider-Man sequel will be out first.

3 Batman: Arkham Knight

8 Batman Arkham Knight

Batman: Arkham Knight launched in 2015. Unless one wants to count the VR spinoff in 2016, Rocksteady has not put out a console game, nor has it teased one, in five years. There have been, however, plenty of rumors.

One was them making a Superman game which then morphed into a Justice League game which then morphed into a game about the Court of Owls arc in the comic. There was also a rumor they were taking on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

2 Rayman Legends

best michel ancel games

Rayman Legends first launched for last-gen consoles in 2013 before getting ported to this generation of systems. There have been sequels in this style since then but they have all been mobile games.

Rayman as a console franchise seems dead yet again. It died once and came back stronger than ever so who knows. There is always hope for a resurrection on PS5.

1 Final Fantasy Type-0

10 Final Fantasy Type-0

Final Fantasy Type-0 first released for the PSP in 2011 as a Japan exclusive. It would not hit the West until the HD remaster in 2015. At the end of the game players could unlock a teaser for a sequel.

However, nothing ever came of this even though a sequel was also announced outside of that teaser as well. All plans have since been canceled.
