The public now has a good idea of PlayStation 4 sales since launch, as the data shows that the company hasn’t reported shipments of the PlayStation 4 console since March 2022. The final results are in.Sony had a lot to prove with the release of this console in 2013, as it followed the bumpy road that was the PlayStation 3 generation. The PlayStation 3's high $600 launch price was a tough barrier for players to gain entry. The console saw various iterations of its design like the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro, the latter of which supported 4K resolution. Although, it is worth noting that the PS4 Pro could not play 4K movies, which sparked debate among the community at the time of its release. Even so, the ability for Sony to learn from its mistakes put PlayStation back on the map as a strong competitor in the gaming industry, which is now revealed in the data showing the final total number of PlayStation 4 shipments, as of March 2022.

Analyst Daniel Ahmad took to Twitter to share a chart that reveals the worldwide PlayStation 4 unit sales from 2013 to 2022. Fans can see an exponential increase in console sales from 2013 to 2016, and then followed by a decrease as the chart shows the number of shipments reducing from 2017 to 2022. In total, the number of PlayStation 4 units sold is 117.1 million, according to the data presented. In comparison, the Nintendo Switch had sold 107.65 million units as of March 2022, and is suspected to surpass the PlayStation 4 in sales. But despite the high number of PS4 sales, the PS5 could overtake the number of PS4 units sold in the coming years.

Regardless of the console’s shortcomings with not being backward compatible and the inability to play 4k movies in the PS4 Pro model, it is still beloved by fans and dominated its generation of gaming. It has been five months since Sony has revealed the quarterly shipment numbers of the PlayStation 4, and it is reported that it will no longer share the shipment data.
