A gamer recently discovered an unopened PlayStation 2 console in their garage. While there's a chance that the Switch will eventually surpass it, the PlayStation 2 is currently the best-selling video game console of all time. Sony and its third-party partners built an incredible library for the PS2 that appealed to both hardcore and casual gamers, with the console also getting significant boosts from fads like the mid-2000s Guitar Hero craze.

Many consider the PlayStation 2 and its library to be the best gaming has ever offered, and look back on the console fondly. There are some PS2 games playable on modern hardware thanks to things like PlayStation Plus Premium's retro library, though the vast majority of PS2 titles remain trapped on the system. This means anyone interested in experiencing the best PS2 games will need to have the actual console itself handy. Used PlayStation 2 consoles retail for around $150 to $200 on sites like eBay, though that price goes up whenever the seller has the box and other accessories handy.

Special PlayStation Consoles Found in the Garbage

A lucky e-waste disposal facility employee stumbles on a pair of special and exceedingly rare PlayStation consoles that someone had discarded.

Recently, Reddit user Torghira discovered an unopened PlayStation 2 console in their garage. The Satin Silver PS2 was bought two decades ago, but was somehow forgotten by Torghira's parents. Since the console is unopened, it's now worth a lot more than it would be had it been opened and used 20 years earlier. Ebay listings for sealed PS2 consoles hover around $1,000, with one seller listing the Satin Silver PS2 specifically for $1,100. If Torghira hangs on to the unopened PS2 for a while longer, it's highly likely that it will increase in value.

Unopened PlayStation 2 Console Found in Garage

Torghira's Satin Silver PS2 is the slim version of the popular console. Sony has a long history of revising its hardware, releasing newer, redesigned versions of its consoles, and the PS2 was certainly no exception to the rule. After years of selling the bulky, original PS2, the company put out the sleeker, "slim" variants. This is a practice that continues to this day with the latest line of PlayStation consoles.

A few years after Sony released the original PS5 consoles, it released slightly smaller, redesigned versions. There are rumors that Sony also has a beefier PS5 Pro console in the works as well, though nothing official to that effect has been announced at the time of this writing. In the meantime, gamers may want to check their garages in case there are any PlayStation consoles hiding in there.
