Tomba Special Edition has been treated to a release date, with Limited Run Games announcing that the PS1 platformer will reach PC and consoles on August 1. Its debut is set to further expand the selection of PS1 classics on the PS5.

Tomba, also known as Tombi in Europe, is a 2.5D action platformer made by Whoopee Camp. It was released for the PS1 in 1997, having subsequently even spawned a sequel in the form of the 1999 Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return. Both games were met with a warm critical response but achieved poor sales, forcing Whoopee Camp to close down in 2000. Tomba hence joined the long list of PS1 franchises that ended in a single console generation.

The first PlayStation was an instant success, boasting a ton of popular video games. Here are the greatest classics to grace this console.

Tomba Coming to the PS5 Ahead of Its 27th Anniversary

In July 2023, Limited Run Games announced that Tomba would be making a comeback on Sony's latest console, as well as several other platforms. The new version of the game has now received a release date, August 1, 2024. Tomba Special Edition is hence set to arrive just several months ahead of the 27th anniversary of the original game's Japanese debut. No pricing information has yet been attached to the upcoming re-release. Both Tomba and its sequel were previously available to PS Vita users for $9.99 a pop, but were pulled from the handheld console's storefront circa early 2021.

The new version of the game may exceed that price, not least because it won't be a straight port. It technically won't be a traditional port at all, as the platformer will run on Limited Run Game's Carbon Engine responsible for many classic game comebacks, meaning it will essentially be emulated. Regardless, the re-release will offer some notable quality-of-life improvements, including the ability to save everywhere instead of relying on checkpoints. A self-explanatory rewind feature will also be part of the package, together with an analog control toggle. The publisher also intends to release this new version of the platformer alongside some never-before-seen development documentation, high-resolution artwork, and a remastered soundtrack, among other bonuses.

Tomba Special Edition Is Also on Its Way to PC and Nintendo Switch

Tomba Special Edition is also coming to the PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Limited Run Games has confirmed that the August 1 release date applies to all versions of the game. PC gamers can already wishlist Tomba on Steam, while the game is still waiting to be listed on other storefronts.

Limited Run Games is generally known for its physical releases. However, it is currently unclear whether Tomba Special Edition will be available in a physical format.
