Sony's big PlayStation Plus revamp is now live across PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles, giving subscribers who choose to upgrade access to hundreds of titles. Those who want the most bang for their buck will want to subscribe to PlayStation Plus Premium, as that not only gives fans access to a selection of retro games, some of which come with enhancements to make sure they run better than they did on their original hardware.
Prior to the launch of the PlayStation Plus revamp, Sony kept mostly quiet about the lineup and what exactly it would entail. As a result, it was unclear to PlayStation fans how many classic games they would be able to access with their PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. Some of the PS Plus Premium classic PS1 games leaked ahead of time, but one that's proven to be a decent surprise is the addition of the classic PS1 game Resident Evil: Director's Cut.
Resident Evil: Director's Cut, for the uninitiated, is one of the best ways to play the original Resident Evil game. Resident Evil: Director's Cut offers new game modes, new cosmetics, and other tweaks to make it the definitive ways to experience the first game in Capcom's celebrated survival-horror series. And like other classic PS1 games available through PS Plus Premium, there are some additional enhancements for Resident Evil fans to check out.
Namely, Resident Evil: Director's Cut on PS Plus Premium lets players save whenever they want as well as rewind the game. One of the key challenges in the original Resident Evil is only saving when necessary, as players have a limited number of ink ribbons they can use to save their progress. The save states available through PS Plus Premium essentially negates that if fans to utilize it, but it's a completely optional feature.
One thing missing from Resident Evil: Director's Cut on PS Plus Premium is trophy support. While there are some PS1 games with trophies on PS Plus Premium, like Ape Escape and Syphon Filter, it was made clear from the get-go that trophy support wouldn't apply to all games available on the service. Even so, this may be disappointing news for Resident Evil fans who were hoping to get a Platinum trophy for the classic game.
It's worth pointing out that there are other Resident Evil games available with PS Plus Premium as well, including Resident Evil 4 through Resident Evil 6, and a number of spin-off titles, so fans of Capcom's horror franchise should be kept plenty busy by the new tiers.
