Based on its typical announcement pattern, Sony will be revealing the upcoming PS Plus games for October on Wednesday, September 29. This is usually a point of high anticipation and eagerness as fans wait to see what the new games are. However, thanks to a recent leak, fans may already know what these PS Plus games are and seem unhappy with the batch.

According to dealabs, the PS Plus free game selection for October 2021 includes Hell Let Loose (PS5), Mortal Kombat X (PS4), and PGA Tour 2K21 (PS4). They are not yet confirmed, but this isn’t any run-of-the-mill leak either. Dealabs has been accurate several times in the past, earning the site a lot of credibility when it comes to these leaks. Fans should still take it with a grain of salt, but it does seem like a safe bet that these games will be the ones Sony announces on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the reception thus far has not been ecstatic. Several fans on the PlayStation Plus subreddit have expressed how unhappy they are with this line-up, with some even saying it’s in their top 3 or top 5 worst PS Plus months, even compared to May 2020 which resulted in a petition. It’s always a personal taste, of course, but there are quite a few reasons fans feel this way.

PS Plus Free Games for October/Halloween

First, many were hoping for a “spooky” horror game given that it’s Halloween. What makes this worse is that Alan Wake Remastered releases on October 5, the same day these PS Plus games will become available. Many suggest the PS Plus games for next month really aren’t in the spirit of the "spooky season," and that’s a fair analysis. While Mortal Kombat X has several DLC characters based on horror franchises, it’s not exactly designed to be scary, and the PS Plus version of the game won’t come with these DLC characters anyway.

PS Plus Free Games on PS4 May Seem Lackluster

Others point out the PS4 game offering specifically being lackluster. Mortal Kombat X, for example, is quite old at this point and has been in several sales in the past; most who are interesting in the fighting game franchise likely already own it, especially with Mortal Kombat 11 out and done too. For PGA Tour 2K21, it’s the fact that it’s a golf game for many, and anyone who is uninterested in golf isn’t going to find too much appeal in this title.

PS Plus Free Games for October 2021 Reveal is Coming in Hot

Notably, Hell Let Loose seems to be the most well-received potential PS Plus game thus far, which makes sense given how well-reviewed it is on PC. Shooters are some of the most popular games out there, and it ticks all the right boxes. That hasn’t prevented some groans about it just being for PS5 subscribers, since the consoles are still hard to get though.

Overall, it’ll be interesting to see if this leak is accurate, and fans don’t have to wait long. It is a bit of a bummer, however, that it seems many are already disappointed with the month before it can even be confirmed.
