It doesn't happen, but sometimes Sony uses its PS Plus line-up to seemingly tease forthcoming announcements. For example, the PS Plus free games for May 2021 included Battlefield 5, and it wasn't long after that Battlefield 2042 was announced. In September 2022, Sony included Need for Speed Heat on the service, and now a few months later, Need for Speed Unbound is actually out. One commonality between the two, aside from the inclusion and following sequel reveal, was the rampart rumors around each (though Battlefield 2042 was called Battlefield 6 at the time).

Now, there aren't many rumors regarding the latest title that could potentially follow suit here, but unlike those titles, it's one that is always in conversation. PS Plus free games for December 2022 include Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, Biomutant, and Divine Knockout, and it cannot be a coincidence that Mass Effect is on the service in December.

PS Plus, Mass Effect, and The Game Awards, Oh My

Everyone keeping up with it knows Mass Effect 4 is in development, with BioWare having released a few teases over the last couple of years, so the context around its inclusion isn't exactly the same. If this PS Plus pattern proves correct, it would also be the fastest inclusion-reveal title of the aforementioned pattern, but it's hard not to connect the dots. December is an important month for BioWare, not least of all for December 4 which is Dragon Age Day, but also because of The Game Awards. BioWare has attended the event every other year, usually with Dragon Age and/or Mass Effect in tow, and this pattern points to a return this year.

BioWare brought Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's first teaser to The Game Awards 2018, skipped 2019, brought Dragon Age: Dreadwolf and Mass Effect 4 in 2020, skipped 2021, and now it's 2022. Companies and people are not as formulaic as a service like PS Plus, but the pattern is clearly there for BioWare to be at The Game Awards. While a Dragon Age: Dreadwolf trailer seems likely because it is in Alpha, a new teaser following up on Mass Effect's Mass Relay reconstruction video from N7 Day is perfectly viable.

The Game Awards and BioWare have a history together. Sony has a pattern with PS Plus. For Sony's PS Plus pattern to line up with Mass Effect when it's likely to be at The Game Awards cannot be a coincidence; after all, if a new Mass Effect trailer is there and it reveals the smallest detail like its official name (more than that is unlikely, given Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is further in development), fans are going to go flocking back to the Legendary Edition. And PS Plus will have it for those to access free, if they don't own it on that platform. It would be a perfectly symbiotic relationship, but fans will find out for sure on December 8.

PS Plus subscribers get a handful of games every month.
