Sony typically announces the new additions to the PlayStation Plus Extra tier of its subscription service a week or so in advance, but it's made an exception for one of the games coming in January 2023. Sony recently pulled the curtain back on all the games coming to the Extra and Premium tiers of PlayStation Plus, with subscribers having plenty of games to look forward to on Tuesday, December 20.

On Tuesday, December 20, PS Plus Extra is getting 17 games, while PS Plus Premium is adding four games. On the PS Plus Extra side of things, subscribers can look forward to more modern titles like Far Cry 5, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, and Middle-earth: Shadow of War. PS Plus Premium subscribers, meanwhile, will be able to check out more classic games from older PlayStation consoles, including the underrated PS3 game Heavenly Sword.

The new PS Plus Extra and Premium games coming on December 20 should keep subscribers plenty busy, but there's even more for them to look forward to in January. On January 3, PS Plus Extra subscribers will be able to check out well-reviewed pro wrestling game WWE 2K22. Since the new PS Plus Extra games are usually added all at once and in the middle of the month, it's a bit odd that WWE 2K22 is coming so early in January and that it's been announced ahead of the other January new additions. Sony has not provided an explanation for this at the time of this writing.

WWE 2K22 earned mostly positive reviews when it launched earlier this year, with many critics hailing it as a return to form for the franchise after the disastrous launch of WWE 2K20. WWE 2K22's strong reviews should make for a great new addition to the PS Plus Extra lineup, though there is one catch that subscribers will want to keep in mind.

As it turns out, only the PS4 version of WWE 2K22 is coming to PS Plus Extra on January 3. For unknown reasons, the PlayStation 5 version of the game is not included in the promotion. Just as no reason has been given as to why WWE 2K22 is being added in early January instead of the middle of the month, there's no explanation as to why PS Plus Extra subscribers are only getting access to the PS4 version of the game.

Regardless, those on PlayStation 5 will still be able to play WWE 2K22 when it joins the PS Plus Extra lineup on January 3. PS5 is backward compatible with PS4, so PS Plus Extra subscribers that have upgraded to Sony's new console should have no problem playing it next month, as long as they aren't too bothered by the fact that they're missing out on the next-gen exclusive features. In the meantime, PS Plus Extra subscribers can count on Sony revealing the rest of the new games joining the lineup next month around the middle of January.
