Survival in the harsh world of Project Zomboid is what players make of it. The ultimate goal is to live as long as possible, but doing so is easier said than done. Every zombie encountered can be the end of a survivor, and while combat feels incredibly satisfying, it's all too easy to get trapped and eaten by a horde before a home base can become a possibility.

Once the hordes start to thin out and an area becomes possible to settle down in, however, Project Zomboid can take on a new life as a Sims-like title. Those who really want their base to stand out and make the overall experience feel more real should consider removing the trash surrounding it and adding some furniture.

How To Pick Up Trash

Players looking to give their home base a makeover will likely want to get rid of the piles of trash found in most buildings and streets. Wrestling control of an area from the undead is no easy feat, especially in urban areas where their hordes are numerous, and the game doesn't make it obvious that the trash can even be moved in the first place. To pick up trash, players should search for the icon that looks like a cabinet as seen in the image above.

Found on the upper-left side of the screen, mousing over this icon will reveal several sub-options. To pick up trash, the cabinet with a green arrow pointed up must be selected. Players should then approach the trash and click on it to add it to their inventories. It doesn't have any uses in crafting and can be quite heavy, so putting it in a bin or dumpster and using the 'delete all' option is recommended.

How To Pick Up (And Place) Furniture

The process of picking up furniture is fairly similar to picking up trash. It's often very heavy, however, and if a player's inventory is already full of firearms, then they'll likely start taking damage unless the furniture is quickly dropped or put into storage. Picking up furniture is only recommended when there aren't many zombies around, and there's usually a high chance of the furniture breaking unless players have increased their carpentry or electrical skills. Larger objects, like beds, will also break into smaller individual pieces when picked up. It's also worth noting that certain objects (like sinks) must be modified after being placed with tools like a pipe wrench before they become functional.

Once in a player's inventory, furniture can be placed by hovering over the cabinet icon and choosing the 'place' option - represented by a cabinet with a green arrow pointed down. Before it's placed, players can rotate the object by clicking and dragging the mouse until it's in the desired position.
