The Sims 4 is still receiving new content in 2024 such as the Urban Homage and Party Essentials Kits, expanding on its current offering even more. Furthermore, a new game is being developed under the codename Project Rene, which would be The Sims 5, and there’s word of a new game called Project Dolores in the works.

Not much is known about Project Dolores, or whether it’s a The Sims game at all. However, judging by the names, the two could be related. Fans will have to wait for more announcements before any conclusions can be drawn regarding Project Rene, Project Dolores, and The Sims 4, but one can speculate about their possible links.

What is The Sims Project Rene?

Announced by Maxis, Project Rene is a The Sims game that will be released on PC and mobile. It is a notable title, as it will feature multiplayer elements, though it will not be an MMO. Leaks suggest that Project Rene will feature cartoonish graphics, which is typical of The Sims, and it will also feature the anti-tamper software Denuvo. Instead of the Frostbite Engine, it will be developed in Unreal Engine.

What is Codename Project Dolores?

Project Dolores hasn’t been officially announced by Maxis, and its existence is only known due to a job listing. The listing seeks a technical director who displays a "depth of knowledge of The Sims and EA’s current game technology.” This suggests the project has something to do with The Sims, or it could be a new life simulator altogether.

Rene is a French word meaning to be born again, and it represents a rebirth for the series. Fans have seen a little of how this rebirth will play out as the game will be launched for free with paid DLC, which is an extension of what The Sims 4 has been experimenting with.

Project Dolores could also be part of that rebirth, as the word is derived from the Latin word “dolor” which means sorrow or pain. This would suggest a new, perhaps even darker route for the franchise to take, as “dolor” isn’t what comes to mind when one imagines The Sims in its current state.

Fans shouldn’t jump to conclusions, as there is every chance that the titles aren’t related. It has been revealed that Project Rene won’t replace The Sims 4 and instead will stand alongside the existing game. This brings into doubt whether Project Rene is The Sims 5 everyone is waiting for.

Instead, Project Dolores could be The Sims 5, while Project Rene is an experimental side project. It would make sense, as players will be waiting for something bigger and better with The Sims 5, which brings to question whether a full-blown ambitious The Sims 5 title could ever be ported to mobile successfully.
