The reactions to the new Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown announcement video have been pretty negative so far, with the game’s trailer essentially having way more dislikes than likes. The new video was released during the Summer Game Fest 2023, and it seems most long-time fans are disappointed with what was shown of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown so far.

Prince of Persia is one of the most beloved franchises Ubisoft has. From the original 1989 2D platformer title to the Sands of Time trilogy in the 2000s, the franchise was a critical success and it even inspired games like the first Assassin’s Creed. However, it was largely left forgotten in the last ten years. Recently, Ubisoft announced a new Prince of Persia and a remake of Sands of Time, but neither of these titles has been met with a pretty good reception, and both were criticized very eagerly by the fan base.

The new Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown trailer currently sits with around 4,600 likes and over 17,000 dislikes on YouTube. The game, which is a reimagining of Prince of Persia in a 2.5D world, was presented in a trailer with vibrant colors, a protagonist that was not the actual Prince of Persia, and even a hip-hop song as the soundtrack. It’s an understatement to say that some fans were not pleased with these choices.

While the gameplay of the upcoming game looks fine, essentially all of the other aspects were criticized, and some of the top comments on the YouTube video’s page show just how negative the overall reaction has been. One user, for instance, affirms that every time a new Prince of Persia game is announced, they consider “finding a new hobby.” Another one complained that gamers were getting a new Prince of Persia after so many years, only for it not to feature the actual Prince of Persia. Many people are complaining about the choice of music used in the video, too, as they believe rap was a pretty weird soundtrack choice for this kind of game, which is based on ancient Persian myths.

Fans who are disappointed with the upcoming Prince of Persia may need to wait for a while before they can finally get a full-blown 3D game, too. A few weeks ago, Ubisoft announced that the remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time won’t release in 2023. The title was originally announced back in 2020, and then later criticized for its underwhelming aesthetics, and it seems that Ubisoft may take a long time to finish it, as it’s still early in development.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown launches on January 18, 2024 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
