The new and upcoming fifth Predator film has reportedly cast Amber Midthunder, who is also one of the stars of Legion, as the lead character. The last time we saw a new film in the franchise was in 2018's The Predator, which was met with a lot of criticism from both fans as well as critics.

Predator is a horror film franchise that has seven-foot-tall sentient alien hunters known as the Yautja. Each film has its own Yautja that the human protagonists must overcome or kill. The rule is generally one new Yautja per film, but recently they have been diverting from this with films such as Alien vs. Predator, The Predator, and Predators. There's still no official explanation in the films as to what the Yautja's purpose is other than their culture revolves around hunting and stringing up "game" as a trophy.

This new Predator film is set to take place before the first installment, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as 'Dutch,' the main lead. It will be following a young woman from a Comanche tribe and her brother as they try to prove themselves as capable warriors and leaders. Discussing Film reports Midthunder is starring as the main character for this film and will be exercising her combat abilities in order to survive the hunt from the giant alien. The Predator series has become very popular over time with the addition of having the Predator as a playable character in Fortnite.

Still no official confirmation from 20th Century Fox, but this all adds up to what was teased earlier in the year by the Predator 5 director Dan Trachtenberg. Of course, Trachtenberg is well known for the film 10 Cloverfield Lane, which was the follow-up to the found footage movie, Cloverfield. Trachtenberg had planned a big reveal for this film and wanted its existence to come as a surprise instead of being revealed as early as it was.

It's been a while since there was a solid Predator movie from start to finish and it's often debated as to which of these films are the best. The usual unanimous decision is the first film since it did a great job at pacing the horror and playing off the idea of not seeing the monster until the final moments of the film. Some successful horror movies use this concept of not showing the monster in the beginning because it causes the viewers' imagination to run wild as to what the monster can do or even looks like. This is tricky because it then becomes the job of the creators to make sure that the reveal is worth the wait in the end.

The biggest issue with the films is that they don't dive into the lore or history of the alien and provide more context as to what their purpose is. They also don't pace the monster's reveal in a mysterious or dreadful way, which means the films have long diverted away from their horror roots. Right now the original writers want the Predator rights back from Disney, which might be a good thing, but pre-production on the new film is already underway. So let's see what the current owners of the franchise can cook while they still have the rights.
