Highlights

  • The Kalos region in Pokemon has always had the potential for expansion, with fans eager to delve into what other parts of the area may be hiding.
  • A creative fan has created their own map for the south of Kalos, adding new cities and locations.

The France-inspired Kalos region is a destination in Pokemon that stands out to many fans, and a creative member of the community has added new cities and locations in their spin on a possible southern expansion to the region. While all regions that have appeared throughout the core Pokemon games are inspired by real-world locations, the in-universe locations of certain regions and the way they connect remain a consistent topic among Pokemon theorists.

When it comes to the Gen 6 games, many fans feel as though the Kalos region has plenty of potential for expansion in terms of both size and history. While Pokemon X and Y were controversial additions to the series due to them transitioning the Pokemon series from 2D to 3D graphics, the games are viewed fondly by many fans today. Still, the games left many loose ends and lingering story points almost completely unexplored, with a potential third version or sequel title never being released.

Many fans of Pokemon's Gen 6 era believe that such expansions could have delved deeper into the lore regarding Zygarde, Mega Evolution, and the history of the Kalos region itself, and one imaginative fan suggests that such expansions could have taken players to the southern portion of the Kalos region. Known online as luggy_sp, this fan took to Reddit to share their own updated Kalos map which includes eight new cities and plethora of additional locations based in the south of Kalos, such as a space center and airfield. The creative and well-made map feels as though it could realistically represent what occupies the space to the south of the Kalos region.

This fanmade map also details how this southern portion of Kalos could line up with the northeastern border of the Spain-inspired Paldea region as well. The potential adjacency of Kalos and Paldea has been a popular yet divisive topic among the Pokemon community, even before the official release of the Gen 9 Pokemon games. While Spain and France are adjoined in the real world, and Paldea does feature a mysterious and unexplorable stretch of land in the same place that the real-world countries connect, there's no in-universe confirmation that the two regions border each other.

When standing upon the highest peak of the Paldea region in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, players will find that there's nothing beyond the north-eastern plateau except for a vast expanse of ocean. While this may just be a consequence of engine limitations, some fans interpret it as a sign that the Paldea region itself is just one big island. In any case, fans will likely uncover more about the Kalos region and its history in Pokemon Legends: Z-A next year.
