Pokemon Unite is getting a new playable character in a few weeks, and it just happens to be a fan-favorite of the original 151 creatures: Mewtwo. The Pokemon-themed MOBA has steadily added to its roster over the last couple of years, with the most recent additions being Umbreon and Leafeon. 2023 has been a big year for Pokemon Unite thus far, and it looks like there are still plenty of exciting additions to look forward to.

The current roster of creatures that are playable in Pokemon Unite contains a good balance of fan-favorites and some less obvious picks that nevertheless make for interesting playable characters. One example of an unusual Pokemon added to the Unite roster is Buzzwole, one of the Ultra Beasts that is essentially a giant mosquito wish massive, bulging muscles. Buzzwole's addition formed part of the Pokemon Unite first anniversary event.

Pokemon Unite is adding the legendary Pokemon Mewtwo to the roster on July 21, 2023, which is the game's second anniversary. Interestingly, it appears that there will be not one, but two versions of the cat-like Psychic Pokemon added: Mega Mewtwo X will release first on the Pokemon Unite launch anniversary, while Mega Mewtwo Y will be released some time in August. It is unknown at this stage what role each version will take; fans are speculating that Mega Mewtwo X could be an All-Rounder, and that Mega Mewtwo Y might be an attacker. However, at this time there has been no official word to confirm their roles.

When Will Mewtwo Be Added to Pokemon Unite?

  • Friday, July 21

Mewtwo is one of the Pokemon franchises most iconic creatures. It served as the antagonist in the 1998 film Pokemon: The First Movie and appears as a major character in the Detective Pikachu spinoff. Mewtwo has also made an appearance in the announcement trailer for Detective Pikachu Returns which will be releasing later this year.

While Mewtwo is only joining the Unite roster in a few weeks, fans of the Pokemon MOBA can look forward to the arrival of Inteleon on July 3 in the interim. Inteleon is the final evolution of the Generation 8 Water-type starter, Sobble. It will be interesting to see how Mewtwo shifts the balance when it does eventually release, but hopefully it won't upset the proverbial applecart as much as fellow legendary Pokemon Zacian did when it was added.

Pokemon Unite is available now for Android, iOS, and Switch.
