As a tie-in with Pokemon: Sword and Shield, The Pokemon Company created Pokemon: Twilight Wings. Set in the Galar region, the show is a series of vignettes that follow different characters.

The vibe of Twilight Wings is, for the most part, pretty peaceful. While other entries in Pokemon canon feature battles for the fate of the world, Twilight Wings features daily routines.

A recent teaser for Twilight Wings showed Allister, the Ghost-type Gym Leader. Now that the episode is actually out, it has certainly delivered on that promise. Allister is the central focus, and ghost types are on full display throughout. This includes a rather creepy easter egg for those who know their Pokedex entries. The ghost-fire type Lampent, first stage of the well-known Chandelure, is seen hanging around outside a hospital in the episode. This is in keeping with one of its Pokedex entries, which states Lampent hangs around hospitals... waiting for people to die. Since its flame is fueled by lost souls, it's a fair guess why it does this.

This does not mean that the episode is focused on sadness or tragedy, it really is just an easter egg. In fact, the episode, while spooky, is very wholesome. It follows Allister and a character from a previous Twilight Wings episode going to the hospital so the other character, Tommy, can apologize to his friend. The episode is full of ghost-type Pokemon, with a Drifloon appearing when Tommy is alone. This could be another Pokedex reference, as Drifloon are known to carry children away to the afterlife.

These little easter eggs are nothing new for Twilight Wings. Sometimes they appear as the silent interactions between characters, other times they are blink and you'll miss it references. These have included the (sort of) unmasking of Ball Guy, who has amassed quite the fallowing. One of the biggest easter eggs might have gotten lost in translation though, as there were originally hints in the episode that Tommy is a ghost himself. This is not verifiable one way or another at this time, but it's a cool theory.

Ghost-type Pokemon have been something of an anomaly throughout the series. Their Pokedex entries are far creepier than average, from their origins to their habits. That said, they are seldom painted as terribly malicious in the Pokemon shows, just mischievous. Even if Tommy is dead in this Twilight Wings episode, there have been far crazier episodes of the Pokemon TV show.

Pokemon: Twilight Wings is airing online only.
