People can never get enough of Pokemon, no matter what form the franchise takes. Through its TV shows, card game, and mainline games, Pokemon is a comforting constant for many. People love Pokemon so much that one fan created Pokemon battles in Animal Crossing: New Horizons using the villagers.

While it has never strayed far from its tried and true formula, Pokemon has endured thanks to several things. Its interesting setting and fun, relatively easy combat system have all contributed to make it a household name. However, every now and then, Pokemon fans unite over something entirely unexpected. Such was the case with the Ball Guy when Pokemon: Sword & Shield were released.

Players originally came together to obsess over the side character thanks to his bizarre headgear. Stationed in front of the gyms of Sword & Shield's Galar Region, Ball Guy is a helpful man of mystery. Some of that mystery was pulled back during a recent episode of Pokemon: Twilight Wings, the tie-in series to Sword & Shield. During Episode 5 of the series, a familiar figure is seen eating at a cafe during a brief nighttime scene: Ball Guy with his mask off and resting on his table.

Unfortunately, the helmet is more visible than Ball Guy's actual face. All that shows is the back of his head and his shockingly blonde hair. At least players know there's a human under the mask of Ball Guy, even if his face remains a mystery. The many rumors of Ball Guy's backstory are safe for the moment, although there is still a chance the truth will come to light one day.

The reveal of the back of Ball Guy's head is actually a very small part of the episode, mostly a blink and you'll miss it moment. The main focus is on Oleana, right hand of the Chairman, and how she keeps things running smoothly. Perhaps there will be a full episode dedicated to Ball Guy in the future, but fans probably shouldn't hold their breath. It would be nice to see where he gets all the free Pokeballs though.

There is, of course, the chance that Ball Guy's origin will be revealed in some of Sword & Shield's DLC. So many Pokemon are already confirmed, it would not be hard to work them and Ball Guy together in a side quest. Until then, fans can only speculate, and gaze upon the back of Ball Guy's glorious head.

Pokemon Sword & Shield are available for the Nintendo Switch.
