A talented Pokemon fan is impressing the internet with their stunning wood carvings of classic TCG cards. The long-running Pokemon Trading Card game remains a major part of the franchise, with new card designs being released and quickly snatched up by dedicated collectors and casual collectors alike on a regular basis. The older cards from the original Generation 1 era are especially popular among hardcore Pokemon fans, so much so that The Pokemon Company recently brought back these retro designs in the Pokemon Trading Card Game Classic premium collector’s set earlier this year.
Pokemon fans have also enjoyed creating inspired artwork of their favorite creatures and cards almost as much as they do playing the Pokemon card game - and have often used the cards themselves as the basis of these pieces. Examples include stunning 3D custom cards of fan-favorite Pokemon like Gengar, colored pencil drawings of “near mint” Charmander cards, and even stunning collages of cards that form inspired artwork of Eevee and its Dark-type evolution Umbreon.
A Reddit user and wood carver by the handle of JoeySmall took things in a decidedly retro direction for their Pokemon TCG art project: a set of laser-engraved renditions of classic cards that they showed off on various subreddits like r/pokemon earlier this week. JoeySmall has made four cards in total, consisting of Venusaur, Blastoise, Charizard, and Mewtwo from the Pokemon Red and Blue generation. They all capture the artwork and description text of the original cards with a surprising amount of detail, and JoeySmall is even selling them to order on Etsy.
This wood-carved tribute to some of the original Pokemon TCG cards comes not too long after the announcement of a new set highlighting the 150 Pokemon of Red and Blue’s Kanto region - including the first new card of Kadabra to be released after magician Uri Geller granted The Pokemon Company permission to do so in 2020. As for the four Pokemon featured in JoeySmall’s carvings, they have all been recurring mainstays in the Pokemon card game and other related media for decades, with Charizard, in particular, having no less than 46 different variants.
In the meantime, JoeySmall’s wooden Pokemon TCG carvings capture the designs of the old Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise, and Mewtwo cards with a striking amount of detail - down to the fully readable text describing each card's special attacks and abilities. Only time will tell if JoeySmall will do carvings of the other 150 Pokemon in the original wave, but these four are an impressive tribute to the old Pokemon cards that helped kick off the franchise.
