When compared to some of the many powerful Pokemon in the series, Drowzee and Hypno are pretty mediocre at best. As a result, it should come as no surprise to learn that neither of the pair has particularly playable cards in the Pokemon TCG. However, just because these two tapir-like Pokemon consistently fail to break into the competitive meta, that doesn't mean that their cards have no value.

Due largely to their connections to hypnosis and insomnia, the two psychic-type Pokemon are often treated to incredibly trippy artwork. This typically involves a lot of bright colors, a selection of jarring and at times disjointed visuals, and some of the strangest Pokemon poses in the history of the long-running trading card game. The best Drowzee and Hypno cards really can make quite the impression and are often difficult to forget once seen.

Silver Tempest Drowzee

Released in late 2022, Silver Tempest is made up of 245 cards and is the last of 12 expansions based around the Sword & Shield games. Both Drowzee and Hypno make an appearance in the set, with the former's being fairly reserved when compared to that of its evolved form.

The person responsible for Drowzee's Silver Tempest artwork is Souichirou Gunjima, who has been working on the Pokemon TCG since the Shining Fates set in early 2021. This was Gunjima's first-ever Drowzee card, but hoping not his last.

Unbroken Bonds Hypno

Unbroken Bonds is the tenth Sun & Moon series and is made up of 234 cards. It was first released in Japan in March of 2019, with the English set arriving some two months later. Hypno serves as a rare in the set and features some of its best and most distinctive artwork.

The illustration for Unbroken Bonds Hypno comes courtesy of Sui, a freelancer who has been providing illustrations for the Pokemon TCG since the Arceus expansion in 2009. Despite having been working on the TCG for more than a decade though, this is her only Hypno card at the time of writing and she has not yet illustrated Drowzee.

EX Team Rocket Returns Drowzee

EX Team Rocket Returns was released in 2004 and is the seventh expansion from the EX Series. The English set is made up of just 111 cards, making it relatively small by modern standards. One of those cards is a Drowzee, with the person responsible for the artwork being Midori Harada.

Harada has been working with the Pokemon franchise since 1996, but it was not until 2002 that she started illustrating cards for the TCG. She's provided artwork for more than 200 cards since then, though only one Drowzee, as of the time of writing. She does have a Hypno card to her name too though, having provided the illustration for the Pokemon's EX Delta Species card in 2005.

EX FireRed & LeafGreen Hypno

The EX FireRed & LeafGreen series is the sixth of the EX Series expansions and was released back in 2004. The English version of the set features 116 cards, all of which revolve around the first-gen Pokemon games. Naturally, this means that a Hypno is included, and it's one of the best-looking cards in the set.

The artist behind EX FireRed & LeafGreen Hypno was Yukiko Baba, who began working on the Pokemon TCG around the time of the Neo Discovery set in 2001. She has more than 150 cards to her name at the time of writing, the majority of which are based on Gen 1 Pokemon.

A lot of the best Drowzee card artwork features soft lines and bright colors, which is perhaps what makes the Pokemon's EX Fire Red & Leaf Green card stand out so much. Interestingly, in Japan, this was actually part of the Flight of Legends set, which was noticeably smaller than its English equivalent.

The person responsible for the artwork was Yukiko Baba, making her one of only a handful of people to have illustrated both Drowzee and Hypno as part of the same set. Her signature style helps to bring a level of synergy between the two cards, which many fans will no doubt have appreciated. The typo in Drowzee's name, perhaps not so much.

EX Team Rocket Returns Dark Hypno

Cohesion isn't something that Pokemon TCG players can always take for granted, with many different illustrators typically being used on any one given set. This often leads to some very contrasting design work, as evidenced by EX Team Rocket Returns Drowzee and the set's Dark Hypno.

While EX Team Rocket Returns Drowzee's artwork is bright and colorful, Dark Hypno is the exact opposite. Granted, this being a dark variant obviously called for a more menacing design, and illustrator Kouki Saitou definitely delivers on this front. Saitou is one of the TCG's most prolific artists, having provided artwork for more than 650 cards since 2003.

Evolving Skies Drowzee

Evolving Skies was released in mid-2021 and is the seventh main expansion of the Sword & Shield series. As is often the case with modern sets, the English version boasts considerably more cards than its Japanese counterpart, with 237 in the former versus just 180 in the latter.

As a result, Drowzee doesn't actually make it into the Japanese version, with the artwork having actually originated from the Silver Lance expansion (Chilling Reign, in the West). The artwork comes courtesy of Nagimis, who has illustrated more than 100 cards since the Burning Shadows expansion in 2017.

Silver Tempest Hypno

If Drowzee's Silver Tempest card is good, then Hypno's is absolutely fantastic. It's easily one of the set's best-looking cards, not to mention one of the most surreal. In this regard, it perfectly captures the Drowzee evolutionary line and is one of the best Hypno cards of all time.

The person responsible for Silver Tempest Hypno's artwork was Shinji Kanda, who only began working on the TCG in early 2022. As a result, he has only illustrated 16 cards at the time of writing, but every single one of them is spectacular in its design. It therefore seems safe to say that fans can expect big things from Kanda in the years to come.

Scarlet & Violet Drowzee

The Scarlet & Violet expansion first debuted in early 2023, just a few months on from the release of the popular Nintendo Switch games. There are more than 200 cards in the English version of the set, including this truly spectacular full-art Drowzee.

Scarlet & Violet Drowzee was illustrated by Tomokazu Komiya, who is one of the longest-serving illustrators for the Pokemon TCG. Having worked with the series for more than a quarter of a century, he has hundreds of cards to his name and is one of the very few people to have illustrated two Drowzee cards (the other being EX Delta Series Drowzee).

XY—BREAKpoint Hypno

When it comes to trippy and surreal Pokemon cards, XY—BREAKpoint Hypno takes the cake. Released in 2016 as part of the second expansion for the XY—BREAK series, it's one of the most visually-impressive cards in the entire TCG and arguably the very best Hypno card of all time.

Funnily enough, the man responsible for this card was Tomokazu Komiya, whose Scarlet & Violet Drowzee can be read about just above. Through his artwork, Komiya is able to perfectly capture the essence of what makes Drowzee and Hypno so great, while also demonstrating his immense skill as an artist.
