Pokemon delivered fans a great new idea in Generation Seven when they came up with the idea of regional forms. These are new versions of old Pokemon that have evolved differently based on the region they are from, and it was a fantastic way of breathing new life into old Pokemon designs. The franchise then managed to find another way of breathing new life into old Pokemon by introducing convergent forms in generation nine.

From Kanto to Sinnoh, from Hoenn to Alola, here is every single Pokemon region that players have been able to explore, ranked.

A convergent Pokemon is a new Pokemon that has become a new version of an older Pokemon based on the environment they live in. For example, the convergent form, Wiglett, is a new version of Diglett that exists near the beach. Sadly, Generation Nine only included two new convergent forms in Wiglett and Toadscruel. Hopefully, this idea will continue to breathe new life into some forgotten Pokemon in generations to come. Even though there is no confirmation of where the next generation of games will be set, there are some old Pokemon desperate for a redesign.

6 Shellder/Cloyster

These Generation One Shells Could Move Inland

  • Debut Region: Kanto/Generation One
  • Type: Shellder: Water, Cloyster: Water/Ice

Shellder is a water type that first debuted in generation one, and its evolved form, Cloyster, is an ice type that has one of the highest base defense stats in the game. The Pokemon even gets some extra attention by being part of the lore based on how Slowpoke evolves. Despite this, Shellder and Cloyster have gone unloved by Gamefreak in the years following their introduction.

That is why these aquatic creatures are perfect candidates for a new convergent form. These shell-based Pokemon can easily be moved onto land and given the ground or rock type in their new forms. Alternatively, the design team could also look at the new form of Shellder/Cloyster that appears at the end of Slowbro's tail when it has evolved for inspiration.

5 Spinarak/Ariados

Spiders Exist On All Continents

  • Debut Region: Johto/Generation Two
  • Type: Spinarak: Bug/Poison, Ariados: Bug/Poison

The first Pokemon to be based on spiders, Spinarak and Ariados, were first introduced in generation two. There have been a few spider Pokemon that have been introduced in the games since, but these new ideas have always left Spinarak feeling like the developers have forgotten about it, and its evolution.

Bringing Spinarak back in the form of a convergent form is a great way to bring this Pokemon back into fans' minds, and it could also give the line the big stat boost that it desperately needs. Unfortunately for arachnophobes, spiders can be found anywhere on our planet. That means designers have plenty of options when it comes to creating a new convergent form for this Pokemon, from the tiny money spider to the ferocious funnel web spider.

4 Seviper

Another Snake That Gets Lost In The Shuffle

  • Debut Region: Hoenn/Generation Three
  • Type: Poison

When fans first caught a glimpse of Seviper in Generation Three, many players assumed that this deadly-looking snake would be a new evolution for Arbok from Generation One. However, Seviper has always stood on its own as a single-stage Pokemon. Perhaps more interestingly, this Pokemon also has lore in the games that pits it in a rivalry with another Pokemon in the region, Zangoose.

It may not be what fans of Seviper want to hear, but this Pokemon's relationship with other Pokemon in the games is exactly what makes it interesting. Therefore, a convergent form of Seviper could see it evolve to fight with a new Pokemon that is introduced into the next region. It can still be a snake, just one with design features that better match its next enemy. Perhaps, it could also have a new form that links it to Arbok, as many fans have always expected.

3 Bidoof/Bibarel

One Of The Most Useful Pokemon In The Games

  • Debut Region: Sinnoh/ Generation Four
  • Type: Bidoof: Normal, Bibarel: Normal/Water

Many players in generation four would have likely caught Bidoof and evolved it into Bibarel to use it as an HM slave. That idea makes perfect sense, as Bibarel is one of the most useful Pokemon to use in a playthrough, as it can remove many obstacles in a player's path. Plus, its additional water typing also allows the player to surf on its back.

Since Bibarel is so good at serving its trainer, perhaps a new convergent form could make it more useful in a new region. For example, a more volcanic region could give Bibarel the fire type instead of water, and one full of forests and foliage could bring about a grass and normal type Bibarel.

2 Litwick/Lampent/Chandelure

A Fire Ghost Type Based On The Most Mundane Object

  • Debut Region: Unova/ Generation Five
  • Type: Litwick: Ghost/Fire, Lampent: Ghost/Fire, Chandelure: Ghost/Fire

Pokemon designs that are based on real-world objects often draw a lot of criticism from players. The ghost and fire type, Chandelure, from generation five is no different, yet its great type and ability in battle has led this Pokemon to have a lot of defenders in the fandom.

Some Pokemon stand out for the wrong reasons. Here are the most controversial Pokemon designs in the series.

One of the best things about the Chandelure line is that its design concept is so simple. It is just a lamp, and every place on Earth is in need of an artificial light source. As a result, finding a new convergent form of Chandelure shouldn't be difficult. A new form based on a flaming brand could be grass and fire type, while a new form of Chandelure based on a more urban gas lamp could be poison and fire type.

1 Nickit/Thievul

A Forgettable Dark Type

  • Debut Region: Galar/Generation Eight
  • Type: Nickit: Dark, Thievul: Dark

Adding a Pokemon based on a fox was mandatory when Gamefreak decided that the region for generation eight, Galar, would be based on the UK. These orange creatures are commonplace in both the wild and in urban areas in th world, which may also be why the developers made Nickit and Thievul very common encounters in early routes and wild areas. This abundance of the Pokemon means that many players often ignore it, or find a more powerful dark type to use later in the game.

That may be why Nickit and Thievul could benefit from a new convergent form in later generations. Perhaps a Nickit that is rarer could develop and thrive in other parts of the Pokemon world, and this rarity could be a reason to give it a more powerful type like dragon or fairy.
