Pokemon is a massive multimedia franchise, boasting successful video games, anime, merchandise sales, and more. One of the largest facets of Pokemon's success is its trading card game, which released a board game called Pokemon TCG: Battle Academy last month and will be continuing its current Sword and Shield-based set releases with the Champion's Path expansion on September 25, 2020.

Champion's Path will include over 70 new cards prominently featuring the Galar Region Gym Leaders and their Pokemon,  according to The Pokemon Company's website. There will be 15 more-powerful "Pokemon V" cards with monsters such as Eldegoss and Lucario, three VMAX Pokemon including Alcremie and Drednaw based on Sword and Shield's Gigantamax phenomenon, and 19 trainer cards alongside a new Special Energy.

For competitive TCG players, this expansion will be legal in standard decks, and Champion's Path will be available in the Pokemon TCG Online alongside its physical release. Before this smaller set is put out, the Sword and Shield TCG Blazing Darkness expansion will be available in August and add nearly 200 new cards into the game.

Though the Pokemon brand is still primarily centered around video games, and will be bolstered through upcoming releases such as Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra DLC, New Pokemon Snap, and Pokemon Unite, the card game has been popular for long enough that it has become quite lucrative. Recently, a UK man found a 20-year old Pokemon card collection that was estimated to be worth over $31,000.

The Pokemon TCG's Champion's Path expansion will be available September 25, 2020.
