Pokemon Sword and Shield, the first console entry in the main Pokemon series, has just launched their first DLC expansion. Known as The Isle of Armor, this new DLC will allow players to explore a new area and capture Pokemon both new and old.

As well as being the first DLC expansion for Pokemon Sword and Shield, The Isle of Armor also marks the first DLC expansion in the main Pokemon series as a whole. In previous entries, players would often have to buy a third game that would release some time after the first two in order to access new features. This trend started all the way back at the beginning with Pokemon Yellow, which gave players a Pikachu as a starter Pokemon and brought in Jessie and James from the anime as recurring fights among other changes. Not counting X and Y, the only other entries that did something different were Black and White, which had direct sequels, and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, which were enhanced versions of the original titles.

Players who journey to the Isle of Armor will find that its main attraction is a second Wild Area, an open area filled with Pokemon that scale to the player's party. The big draw of this Wild Area is that it has its own Pokedex for that area, as does the upcoming DLC The Crown Tundra. This area's Pokedex includes a variety of old Pokemon, old Pokemon with new Galarian forms, and new Pokemon, including the legendaries Kubfu and Urshifu. Players can access the new content once they've unlocked the first Wild Area.

To celebrate the release of The Isle of Armor, Pokemon Sword and Shield will be hosting a special Max Raid Battle featuring the mythical Pokemon Zeraora. Introduced back in Pokemon Sun and Moon, this Electric-type Pokemon will be available until June 28th. If at least one million players catch Zeraora by the time the event ends, they'll also receive a shiny version of the Pokemon.

Pokemon Sword and Shield isn't the only game celebrating this new DLC release. Pokemon GO is also celebrating by releasing the Galarian form of Farfetch'd for players to catch. If they can get their hands on this Pokemon, players can also obtain its evolution Sirfetch'd.

Pokemon Sword and Shield is available on the Nintendo Switch, and The Isle of Armor released today.
