What is Project Snorlax?

Project Snorlax, launched by The Pokemon Company in 2023, is a campaign dedicated to the snoozing pocket monster - Snorlax. It includes social media campaigns, entertainment products, and advertisements. The campaign, which started on March 17, 2023 (coinciding with World Sleep Day), aims to showcase the "cuteness, coolness, and loveliness" of Snorlax, according to Pokemon. The initiative has a website, Twitter, and Instagram accounts. This is not the first campaign of its kind, as Project Eevee was conducted in 2017 and Project Piplup in 2021, which also focused on specific Pokemon and included special social media and website activities as well.

Some events of Project Snorlax have included a trailer showcasing Snorlax in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet on June 22 and a short film titled Good Morning, Kabigon on June 23. A manga series, Kabigon's Dream Gourmet, by Taku Kuwabara was announced the next day. Additionally, throughout Project Snorlax, social media featured daily artwork, including various Pokemon sleeping with Snorlax - including Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Lapras, Eevee, Clefairy, and Togepi. On December 8, 2023, a four-part short series was released on the official Pokémon YouTube Channel called The Adventures of Snorlax & Cubone.

The Adventures of Snorlax and Cubone Showcases the Unlikely Pair

The short was released on December 29, 2023, and runs a little over 5 minutes. The story takes place over four seasons. It begins with the lonely, crying Cubone wandering into a Snorlax eating a pile of glowing mushrooms. Initially afraid, as the story progresses, we see Snorlax comforting Cubone, and they grow closer and closer. Cubone jumps gleefully on Snorlax’s belly, they share forged fruit in the fall, watch the Northern Lights in the winter, and see the sunrise in the spring.

Both Pokemon are Usually Pretty Solitary

Snorlax is known for its love of sleeping and can usually be found in isolated locations, blocking paths with its massive size. On the other hand, Cubone has one of the saddest origin stories. Cubone is often depicted wearing a skull on its head. The skull is of its deceased mother. According to the official Pokemon website, “When the memory of its departed mother brings it to tears, its cries echo mournfully within the skull it wears on its head.” So, seeing these two Pokemon, each dealing with their own forms of isolation, find solace and connection in one another, offers a touching and heartwarming story that resonates with fans.

Just like in Pokemon Concierge, Fans Love to see Pokemon Getting Along

Just like in Pokemon Concierge, fans love to see Pokemon not fighting sometimes. Pokemon Concierge, a stop motion series released on Netflix in December 2023, follows the story of Haru, a newly employed concierge at the Pokemon Resort where Pokemon and their owners visit for much-needed rest and relaxation. Pokemon such as Panpour, Bulbasaur, Pikachu, Eevee, Dragonite, Magikarp, and Psyduck make appearances at the resort.

Fans have been very positive towards this series as it portrays Pokemon engaging in activities other than battling. While battles are a major component of the Pokemon series, witnessing the adorable pocket monsters doing something other than fighting is always a special treat for fans. This same appeal holds for The Adventures of Snorlax and Cubone. Observing Snorlax and Cubone playing in the snow, cuddling, and sharing meals in a slice-of-life animated short is not only adorable but also a heartfelt joy to witness.
