The Pokedex is one of the coolest gadgets in this world. Who could forget the voice of the device in the anime series? It’s a fun tool that fans dreamed about having in real life for decades. As cool as the gadget is, the entries in it can sometimes be alarming.

The entries in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet are no different in that there are some truly wild stories in both games. A lot of them don’t make sense if one were to consider how society is run in these universes if the Pokedex entries are taken literally. The Pokedex entries are odd, but fun to laugh with as well, so let’s go through some of the zaniest ones in these Pokemon games.

8 Tinkatuff

Tinkatuff Pokedex entry in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet

Tinkatuff is a Fairy/Steel combo Pokemon that is great to have in some of the later game’s battles. The Pokedex entry from Pokemon Scarlet reads, “This Pokemon will attack groups of Pawniard and Bisharp, gathering metal from them in order to create a large and sturdy hammer.”

This implies that it murders these two Pokemon just to make a hammer. This Pokemon begins with a useless club as Tinkatink, gets the metal it needs as Tinkatuff, and then has an even bigger hammer when it evolves into Tinkaton. Does Tinkaton’s hammer have new body parts in it, or does the hammer go through evolution somehow too?

7 Charcadet

Charcadet Pokedex entry in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet

Charcadet is a Fire-type Pokemon that looks a bit humanoid in nature. It looks more like a Digimon than a Pokemon which becomes apparent when it either evolves into Armarouge or Ceruledge depending o the version players have.

The Pokemon Scarlet version for this Pokemon reads, “Burnt charcoal came to life and became a Pokemon, possessing a fiery fighting spirit, Charcadet will battle even tough opponents.” Since it is a possessed piece of coal, shouldn’t that automatically make it a Fire/Ghost type? That’s what it becomes if it evolves into Ceruledge otherwise it will be Fire/Psychic if it turns into Armarouge.

6 Maschiff

Maschiff Pokedex entry in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet

Maschiff is a Dark-type Pokemon whose Pokedex entry is a bit hilariously tragic. “It always scowls in an attempt to make opponents take it seriously, but even crying children will burst into laughter when they see Maschiff’s face.” That’s what it says in Pokemon Scarlet, which has to tug on the old heartstrings.

The Pokedex entry makes sense though as the face this thing makes is silly. Mabosstiff, its evolved form, thankfully doesn’t say anything mean about its face. In fact, the Pokemon seems to love kids which is sweet.

5 Rellor

Rellor Pokedex entry in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet

Rellor is a Bug-type that resembles a dung beetle but with an odd twist. “This Pokemon creates a mud ball by mixing sand and dirt with psychic energy and it treasures its mud ball more than its own life.” This entry from Pokemon Scarlet is as confusing as Charcadet since Rellor isn’t a Psychic-type.

The Pokemon Violet entry implies that this Pokemon evolves once the ball gets to a certain size. Even stranger, entries for the evolved form, Rabsca, implies there is an infant inside this new version of its prized ball. Rabsca is a Bug/Psychic Pokemon, which is a situation of better late than never.

4 Sinistea

Sinistea Pokedex entry in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet

Sinistea is a Ghost-type Pokemon that is a spirit living inside a teacup. The Pokemon Scarlet Pokedex entry says, “The soul of someone who died alone possessed some leftover tea, this Pokemon appears in hotels and houses.”

The very notion of this entry would terrify anyone who wanted to drink tea in this universe as there are hundreds, if not thousands of these Pokemon floating around. Also, players can most readily find them hanging around in fields and not houses or hotels like the Pokedex says. The game breaks its senseless logic, which is hilarious.

3 Cryogonal

Cryogonal Pokedex entry in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet

One Pokedex entry looking at a Ghost-type Pokemon is not enough. Cryogonal is another odd spirit although it is only categorized as an Ice-type Pokemon. “Cryogonal appear during cold seasons, it is said that people and Pokemon who die on snowy mountains are reborn into these Pokemon.”

This entry in Pokemon Scarlet isn’t as horrifying or as specific as Sinistea. However, this implies that people who die in the cold get reborn as Pokemon. Is there no afterlife in this universe? Do the Pokemon games believe in reincarnation through Pokemon? Many entries, besides these two ghosts, seem to imply this is the case.

2 Komala

Komala Pokedex entry in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet

Komala is a Normal-type Pokemon and its design isn’t that radically different from a real Koala Bear. Pokemon Scarlet’s entry reads, “Komala spends its entire life sleeping, it feeds on leaves that contain a potent poison only Komala can break down.”

If taken literally, how could Komala fight in battle if it is always asleep, or eating for that matter? These things also have to breed, so go and figure that one out. Snorlax, from the first round of games, was a Pokemon that was also a heavy sleeper, and yet players could command it to fight. This universe is full of sleepless mysteries.

1 Igglybuff

Igglybuff Pokedex entry in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet

Igglybuff is the younger form of Jigglypuff, a Pokemon that is perhaps best known for its temperament in the anime series. This Normal/Fairy combo Pokemon is cute but has a scary biological disorder looming over its head. “Its body has a faintly sweet scent and is bouncy and soft, if it bounces even once, it cannot stop.”

Does this mean it cannot jump to evade or jump in general? If it did, that means it could be cursed to bounce. It’s funny that Pokemon Scarlet paints a horrific picture of poor Igglybuff while Pokemon Violet is all about its want to sing.

Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet was released on November 18, 2022, and is available on Switch.
