Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's imminent release has millions of fans excited to see what Gen 9 games have in store, especially considering that very little is officially known about them. Most of the information surrounding Gen 9 comes from leakers and rumors, to the point that the entire Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Pokedex was leaked months ahead of launch, including some of the critters that were showcased in trailers further down the line. An example comes from Greavard, the newly announced Ghost-type puppy, which was leaked a long time ago alongside another dog Pokemon species that hasn't been officially revealed yet, this time a Dark-type.

Speaking of Dark-type pocket monsters in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, according to the leaks this is the single most populated type out of the entirety of Gen 9, and that's because many eleven species out of the leaked 103 have it. And yet, out of all the Pokemon revealed for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet so far, none of them are Dark-type, and in fact, out of the 20 officially known now, The Pokemon Company hasn't even revealed one critter per existing type. While this may be normal to a degree with only 20 critters showcased ahead of launch, it's a symptom of the fact that this reveal cycle has been exceptionally dry, to the point that leaks became the main marketing source for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Which Pokemon Types Are Missing From Scarlet and Violet's Current Roster

Pokemon Magnezone

As it stands, out of the 20 Pokemon revealed ahead of Gen 9's launch, only 14 out 18 existing types are represented to a degree, and one of them is not even an official type. In fact, Koraidon is allegedly going to be a Dragon/Fighting Pokemon, whereas Miraidon is supposedly an Electric and Dragon hybrid, but while there are other Electric and Dragon Pokemon listed on the official website, Koraidon is the only Fighting-type.

There are multiple Fire and Electric-types that have been revealed so far for Gen 9 games, with them being Fuecoco, Armarouge, and Ceruledge for the former, and Pawmi and Bellibolt for the latter, again not counting one of the box Legendaries. There have also been many Normal-type Pokemon in the trailers for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet so far, including Smoliv, Lechonk, Cyclizar, Grafaiai, and finally Farigiraf. As such, it seems strange that none of the Gen 9 trailers were focused on some of the other missing types, just to offer a more accurate perspective on what to expect from the games.

Dark, Bug, Flying, and Steel-type Pokemon were completely left untouched in the reveals, although it appears that a Steel critter was shown as early as the first Team Star trailer. This is the alleged Steel/Poison engine Pokemon that leakers have been talking about, and it seems that it can be spotted in Team Star's flaming bus, on top of which Mela appears in one of the villainous team's hideouts. However, this creature was never publicly addressed by The Pokemon Company, and only players who kept up with the leaks know about its existence.

It's also worth noting that one of the 20 Pokemon showcased so far from the Paldean Pokedex is a regional form rather than an entirely new species. This critter is Wooper, and it is the only Ground-type revealed thus far, but that is no coincidence. In fact, based on the leaks, there is only one completely new Ground-type in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and it's a Legendary - namely, one of the pocket monsters that comprise this generation's Legendary quartet. Overall, The Pokemon Company's silence is understandable on one hand, but on the other it does bear questions about what to expect moving forward.

PokemonScarlet and Violet release on November 18 for Nintendo Switch.
