Highlights

  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet break tradition by not including Togepi, a popular Pokemon that has been present in every game since Gen 2.
  • The absence of Togepi is disappointing for fans who have come to love and cherish the cute creature and its evolutions in the past 23 years.
  • While Gen 9 may not include Togepi in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, there is still hope that future games or remakes will feature the beloved Pokemon.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are far from perfect titles, even after the controversies of Gen 8 and some longtime issues within the series, but they still make for a fantastic experience for newcomers and veterans alike thanks to how different some classic elements are. Despite technical and performance issues, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are not afraid to break traditions in many great ways, with examples including how Gen 9 doesn't feature tall grass encounters or that The Indigo Disk brought every starter Pokemon back. There are many traditions that Gen 9 broke that made for new, compelling ways to play the game, and while most of them are for the better, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet sadly break one Togepi tradition that dates back to Gen 2.

Gen 2 games are arguably among the fan favorites in the entire saga, possibly because they were the introduction to the series for many veterans, or they came with a beloved region and roster of critters. Among these Pokemon is Togepi, which made its debut in the Pokemon anime as an egg that later hatched into this cute creature, eventually becoming one of Misty's signature pocket monsters. Ever since Pokemon Gold and Silver, Togepi has been in Pokemon GO and part of the mainline series of games in one way or another, but Gen 9 breaks away from this 23-year streak.

How Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Break a Huge Togepi Tradition

Togepi Was in Every Pokemon Game Since Gen 2

It doesn't come as a surprise now that Gen 9 would end up not featuring every Pokemon in the series after the controversial Pokedex changes in Pokemon Sword and Shield, as the sheer amount of critters was ever-growing, thus making it harder to make 3D models for all of them in every modern title. As such, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have many returning Pokemon and missing critters in The Indigo Disk, and one of them is Togepi itself.

Before Gen 9, Togepi had been available in every generation of Pokemon games, starting with Gen 2. Although Togetic's evolution into Togekiss was only added in Gen 4 games, Gen 3 still featured Togepi and Togetic, and Togekiss became a mainstay from Gen 5 onward, so it can be upsetting that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet decided to do without these three.

Every Pokemon Game With Togepi and How to Get it

These Pokemon even play a big role in Pokemon Legends: Arceus' Volo battles, as they are used as a callback to Cynthia from Gen 4 titles to further reinforce the idea that Volo is her ancestor - even using her battle theme. Togepi is often considered one of the cutest Pokemon ever, and its moving anime arc likely plays a part in this. Togepi could be found in the following games, with the following conditions:

The Indigo Disk DLC doesn't feature some Pokemon that have never been on Switch games, either, so while the Togepi line's fate is sad, Gen 9 could have "saved" some other evolutionary lines as well. However, Gen 9 games may very well end up including Gen 5 remakes or other titles that do feature Togepi in some capacity - even if it won't be available in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
