The Teal Mask DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is home to a brand-new Legendary trio of mons for players to battle and catch, with these three critters also playing a crucial role in the plot of the DLC. Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti, also known as the Loyal Three, are a unique new take on the series' Legendary trio motif that can be found in most generations. However, while there are plenty of features unique to the Loyal Three in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the three also share a surprising number of traits with another trio of Legendary beasts.

Legendary trios have been a staple of the franchise since Gen 1 introduced Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, and most generations have continued this trend of having three related yet different Legendaries for players to capture. Perhaps one of the most popular of these Legendary trios is Gen 2's Suicune, Raikou, and Entei - also known as Johto's Legendary Beasts - who introduced a memorable piece of lore to the Pokemon universe. Although the Loyal Three may not have as iconic of a status as the Legendary Beasts, their characterization within The Teal Mask somewhat mirrors Johto's Legendary trio.

The Teal Mask’s Loyal Three Make Interesting Counterparts to Johto’s Legendary Beasts

The story of the Legendary Beasts tells of three unnamed creatures that were trapped in Ecruteak City's Brass Tower when it burned down and perished in the fire. They were then revived by Ho-Oh who granted them the power of the three events surrounding the fire: the lightning that struck the tower, the fire it started, and wind and rain that put the fire out. Now known as Suicune, Raikou, and Entei, these three Legendary Beasts became revered by the people of the Johto Region, and their legend was passed down through each generation.

The Loyal Three share a very similar story to that of the Legendary Beasts, but with an added twist to make their origin story stand out from other Legendary trios in the franchise. Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti were said to have been a trio of heroic mons that defended Kitakami from Ogerpon's attacks, yet tragically perished in the battle against the ogre. While this earned them the reverence of the people of Kitakami who built statues and shrines in their honor, the truth of the story ends up casting a negative light on these three as they were actually greedy villains who were antagonizing Ogerpon in an attempt to obtain its masks.

Aside from both trios being hailed as heroes, the other main commonality they share is perishing tragically only to be resurrected at a later time. While the Legendary Beasts were said to be revived by Ho-Oh after the Brass Tower fire, it's unclear what force caused the Loyal Three to be revived, but they are resurrected from their resting place after the player defeats Kieran in a battle at Loyalty Plaza. Like the Legendary Beasts fleeing to roam around the Johto Region, the Loyal Three then return to Mossui Town where they are given Ogerpon's masks before fleeing to various locations around Kitakami.

The major difference between these two Legendary trios is the morality associated with them, as Suicune, Raikou, and Entei are benevolent guardians of Johto, whereas Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti are greedy thieves who were mistakenly remembered as heroes. Additionally, the Legendary Beasts follow the common type triangle of Fire, Water, and Electric, while the Loyal Three have more interesting typings and all share the Poison type as one of them. There are clear parallels between these two trios, just as there are between Kitakami and Johto, ultimately making the Legendary Beasts and Loyal Three two groups of unlikely counterparts.
