Highlights

  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's upcoming DLC, The Teal Mask, will introduce a new mini-game called Ogre Oustin' where players pop colored balloons, hinting at Ogerpon's typing.
  • The balloons from the Ogre Oustin' mini-game come in four colors - grey, green, red, and blue, and they could each be associated with a type. Ogerpon's base type could be Normal.
  • Ogerpon's typing in The Teal Mask DLC remains uncertain, but speculation points to the possibility of it having multiple types or Tera forms, potentially gaining secondary types like Grass, Fire, or Water.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are currently getting multiple updates in the form of new Tera Raid battles against powerful critters from past generations, and while that can be limiting players to a certain gameplay loop for the time being, in just a month The Teal Mask DLC will come out. It's yet unclear what exactly it will entail in terms of endgame grinds, but the recent Pokemon Presents did shed some light on the expansion's characters, locations, new critters, and some of its activities. Among them is a new mini-game that consists of making colored balloons pop, with them hinting at Ogerpon's typing in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's first DLC.

Pokemon types are often a big part of a critter's identity and what can make them wildly different in terms of power and usability, but The Pokemon Company has been quite tight-lipped when it comes to the various new critters in Gen 9's DLC. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's new Applin evolution breaks this pattern with its complete bio on the official website for the games, which states that it's a Grass/Dragon critter, much like the other Applin evolutions from Gen 8. Still, with Ogerpon likely playing a big role in the story for The Teal Mask, players are excited to learn what its type or type combo could be.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Ogerpon Could Have Multiple Types and Forms

Pokemon Scarlet Violet DLC Ogerpon

According to the newly surfaced details for The Teal Mask DLC, players will be able to partake in a mini-game that's not too dissimilar from Pokemon Legends: Arceus' Drifloon balloon-popping race, but this time with Ogerpon balloons. The mini-game is called Ogre Oustin', and the trailer shows a total of four different colors for the balloons, but only the green ones show the Legendary Pokemon's mask as players currently know it. On the back of the green balloons players can spot the symbol for Grass-type Pokemon, which is in line with expectations for Ogerpon.

However, there are also gray, red, and blue balloons, with the red ones having the symbol for Fire-type Pokemon on their backs. This makes the blue ones very likely to be tied to Water, whereas the gray ones are most likely tied to Normal Pokemon - the other option being Steel, which seems more unlikely considering Ogerpon's appearance and Kitakami being the setting for The Teal Mask DLC. As it stands, the most plausible explanation seems to be that Ogerpon's typing is just Normal - but that can change.

If that is the case, then Ogerpon could either gain Grass, Fire, or Water as its secondary types or just become a single-type Pokemon with the matching type. As to how this could happen, it's quite likely that Ogerpon's appearance as Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players know it is with the critter using a Grass-type mask, which is associated with the green balloons. However, since there are red and blue balloons that seem to be for Fire and Water, it's possible that Ogerpon has two more masks that haven't been shown, and they turn it into a Fire-type or Water-type, respectively.

Considering that the trailer for The Indigo Disk shows what seemed Terapagos' pre-evolution become the actual Terapagos, Tera forms seem very much confirmed - and they could apply to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Ogerpon too. Assuming there are no further colored balloons in the Ogre Oustin' mini-game, it's safe to bet that Ogerpon will either have four different masks, with one of them being Normal-type, or have three of the series' most iconic elements and then a base one that's associated with its regular type. This remains unconfirmed for the time being, but it seems the most likely outcome for Gen 9's first DLC.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now for the Nintendo Switch.
