A DLC expansion pass has been announced for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet as part of the special Pokemon Presents for Pokemon Day 2023. This DLC, titled The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, will feature two waves of content: The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk, each with their own new story, setting, and creatures for players to collect. As part of these two waves of DLC, two new Legendary mons, Ogerpon and Terapagos, were introduced as the featured creatures for this expansion, although their typing still remains a mystery.

Despite no direct confirmation of their types, there are a lot of clues surrounding the designs of these two mons, as well as the implications of the DLC titles themselves, that provide a solid basis for type speculation. The central plot of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet revolves around the mystery of the Terastal Phenomenon and its connection to Area Zero. With the title of the expansion being The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, it's very likely these two mons will play a key role in understanding the origins of the Terastal Phenomenon and its power to change a creature's type.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Ogerpon and Terapagos' Types

The first wave of the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC is The Teal Mask, which features Ogerpon as the mascot legendary. Upon first appearance, Ogerpon bears a striking resemblance to the Gen 8 Mythical Zarude, a Grass/Dark type. Given the small leaves found on Ogerpon's feet, it's very likely that it is also a Grass type, and the sinister look on its masked face paired with the black coloring in its design suggests that Ogerpon may also have the Dark type as a secondary typing.

However, with how recent of an addition Zarude was, and Paldea's many new Grass/Dark-type mons -- like Meowscarada, Brute Bonnet, and even another Legendary, Wo-Chien -- it seems unlikely that Ogerpon would be yet another creature to use that same type combination. Instead, it's possible that Fighting is its secondary typing with the way artwork for the monster has it standing in an action pose as if ready to strike with powerful kicks. It's also entirely possible that Ogerpon is simply a pure Grass type, but its design motifs would be a bit of a waste if it didn't include a secondary typing.

Terapagos is the other new Legendary creature introduced as the mascot for the second wave of DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, The Indigo Disk. This monster has the appearance of turtle-like creature with a cosmic, jewel-like shell and flowing tail. Initially, it appears that Terapagos could be a Psychic type given its cosmic appearance, and its crystaline shell could suggest a Rock type as well. There is also the possibility of the Water type being a part of its type combination given that it is clearly based on a turtle or tortoise.

It should be noted that the shell of Terapagos looks very similar to the Tera crystals found throughout Paldea's Area Zero, which could explain how it ties into The Hidden Treasures of Area Zero title for the overall expansion. Additionally, Terapagos' shell appears to contain the symbols for every possible type present in the Pokemon series. Given its likely connection to the Terastal Phenomenon, Terapagos may be a Normal type with the ability to change into any other type under certain conditions, similarly to how Arceus and Silvally operate. This mechanic would give it a special place among a select group of mons with a similar ability, cementing its importance to the lore surrounding Terastallization.
