Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Paldea Region is about to play host to one of the Pokemon series' most legendary rivalries. As part of this week's Pokemon Presents event, the Pokemon Company announced various updates for its current slate of titles. Toward the presentation's end, a variety of events, new Pokemon, and DLC trailers were revealed for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Perhaps the most significant was the announcement of the Get Mew and Mewtwo event, which sees the two rivals bring their eternal bout to the Paldea region. The nature of the event's conflict is enough to excite any longtime Pokemon fan, but its true strength lies in breaking away from convention. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet were released in November 2022, ushering in a new era for the fan-favorite series. Adapting some elements from Pokemon: Legends Arceus, Gen 9 featured an open world and revamped battle and catch mechanics. At the center of its narrative, and map, was Area Zero, a mysterious Great Crater where time and space converge, resulting in unique Paradox Pokemon. In addition to the Get Mew and Mewtwo events, the Pokemon Presents event gave fans their best look yet at The Treasure of Area Zero DLC, which will reveal new details about Paldea's mysterious crater.
Scarlet and Violet's Get Mew and Mewtwo Event
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Get Mew and Mewtwo event sees players dragged into the two legendary Pokemon's conflict. The event's trailer saw a floating Mewtwo preparing to unleash a massive ball of energy, aimed directly at Mew and a group of Pokemon on the ground. Following the trailer, Takato Utsunomiya, Chief Operating Officer of The Pokemon Company, confirmed that players will be allying themselves with Mew in order to end Mewtwo's destructive assault within Paldea. To prepare for this daunting foe, players have been given a brief period to train their team alongside its powerful new ally.
The early stages of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Mewtwo event are already underway. Starting August 8, 2023, Pokemon fans can add Mew to their party by utilizing the Mystery Gift code "GETY0URMEW". This gives players a little over three weeks to prepare to face off against Mewtwo, who arrives in a Tera Raid Battle on September 1. Leading up to Mewtwo's reveal, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will host two Tera Raid Battle events, with Wave 1 taking place from August 9 to 17, and Wave 2 taking place from August 18 to 31.
Pokemon Gen 10 Needs Events Like Get Mew and Mewtwo
Pokemon Gen 10 is likely a few years away, as Gen 9 and 8 were released three years apart. When it arrives, Gen 10 will need to adopt a series of lessons learned through Scarlet and Violet's attempts at modernization. Among those are Gen 9's monotonous themed events, many of which simply added a new Tera Raid Battle with no context are greater purpose. That trend is what so easily sets Get Mew and Mewtwo apart from prior entries, as both its announcement trailer and the event itself feature a conflict central to many longtime fans' experience with the series as a whole, and offer a cinematic context for the event's existence in Paldea.
Pokemon Gen 10 would be wise to adopt Get Mew and Mewtwo's formula for its themed events and potential raid battles. In doing so, Gen 10 could avoid one of Scarlet and Violet's biggest missteps. By announcing events with a trailer or reveal that offers additional stakes, and in-universe context, Gen 10 can invest fans in its events long before their climactic resolution or reward, breaking a mold that has become predictable in Gen 9, if only by small cracks at first. Fans of the Pokemon series hope that Get Mew and Mewtwo is the beginning of a new trend for the series' events, ushering in a brighter, and more exhilarating, future for Gen 10's post-release offerings.
