Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's first DLC came out just a week ago, and while its story may not be on the same level as the base games', it is a good way to set up the events of The Indigo Disk and possibly future Pokemon games as well. For starters, although it's never explicitly referred to as such, there are several clues that point to the existence of a new master "peach" Pokemon in The Teal Mask - one that seemingly gave the Loyal Three their powers and brought them back during the events of the DLC. It's unclear whether this will have consequences for the story of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Area Zero, but there is something else that may have affected it already - and that's Volo from Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

When players met Volo in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, he was simply acting as a merchant from the Ginkgo Guild, traveling around Hisui to learn more about the myths and legends of the Pokemon world. Further down the line, Volo reveals his true nature and plans by stating that he wants to reshape the world to make one that isn't as flawed, and he wants to catch Arceus for this very purpose, further stating that it doesn't matter how many years or centuries it takes him. Yet, the more interesting part is that Gen 9 games feature the so-called Treasures of Ruin, which were sold to the king of Paldea by a merchant from the East.

How Volo Could be Involved With Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Treasures of Ruin Story

The Treasures of Ruin in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet comprises the snail-like Grass/Dark Pokemon Wo-Chien, the snow feline Ice/Dark Chien-Pao, the moose Earth/Dark Ting-Lu, and the fish Fire/Dark Chi-Yu. These creatures were not even Pokemon, once upon a time, but rather actual treasures found in the East that found their way to Paldea.

These treasures were wooden tablets for Wo-Chien, blades for Chien-Pao, a ritual vessel for Ting-Lu, and curved beads for Chi-Yu. According to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's story, these treasures were sold to the king of Paldea by a merchant, and since they were imbued with humanity's negative emotions, they became ruinous Pokemon when exposed to the king's own dark desires. They would then awaken, destroy the king's castle, and go on to devastate the entire kingdom of Paldea in just one night. They would then be sealed away in their respective shrines with the help of powerful stakes.

The reason Volo would make sense as the culprit is that he was indeed a merchant from the East, and possibly a time traveler too, and if the fall of the Paldean kingdom was any use to him, he would have most likely tried to cause it. While this could have been any other merchant from the East or even someone else from the Ginkgo Guild, Volo is the most prominent character with ill intentions among the group. Furthermore, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Heath was the first to explore the crater of Paldea, and one picture of his expedition features someone with what seems like the Ginkgo Guild backpack.

While this may just be a coincidence, the fact that Volo explicitly tells the main character in Pokemon Legends: Arceus that he will achieve his purpose, no matter if it takes him centuries, implies that he is either immortal or a time traveler. The latter is more likely because of other time travelers in the Pokemon world, such as Looker or even Pokemon Legends: Arceus' Ingo. More importantly, it's implied that Professor Sada and Turo's time machine functions thanks to Terastal energy, which would justify Volo's presence in the region. Still, the fact that it was specified that a merchant from the East sold the king of Paldea the Treasures of Ruin doesn't seem like a minor detail, and future Pokemon Legends games could circle back to this and Volo's story.
