It’s really no secret that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are about time. The professors’ names and general design are dead giveaways, with Sada being short for Pasada (past) and Turo being short for Futuro (future). Many also believe that there is an evolution gimmick in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, based on time.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see it somehow tied to the plot of the game, but Riddler Khu has suggested how this may be. For those unfamiliar, Khu is one of the most trusted leakers in the Pokemon space, having accurately leaked details as recently as Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. They confirmed the appearance of Sprigatito and Fuecoco ahead of their initial reveal, and now he’s made a tease involving a time travel-based movie.

Khu recently shared an image of a movie called The Lake House, starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, and the movie features two lovers communicating via letter in a shared time-traveling mailbox. Reeves plays a man from the past, while Bullock plays a woman from the future. Khu said to project their relationship onto Titan (the code name for Scarlet and Violet), leading to many theories.

The obvious connection would be that the plot somehow involves communication between the past and present. It’s theorized that Koraidon and Miraidon are evolved legendaries from a base Pokemon, perhaps who could travel through time, and they could play a role. At the same time, it could be related to the mailbox where there is some location that communicates through time. It could even be full-blown time travel, since Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have four-player co-op, and there would need to be some explanation if Scarlet is the past and Violet is the future.

Some have taken Khu’s hint more literal, suggesting that Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock’s movie could hint at a relationship between Sada and Turo. Perhaps it involves other characters, but however it all shakes out, it’s an interesting setup to the game if there is some connection or communication point between past and future.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus really set the groundwork for time travel, mechanically and plot-wise, but it’s likely Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will innovate even further. The leading theory, for example, in regards to its gimmick is some time-based evolution that changes types of the Pokemon, similar to Hisuian forms in Arceus. Of course, it all really depends on where Game Freak wants to go with the story, but fans will just have to wait for confirmation.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet release November 18 for Nintendo Switch.
