With the Indigo Disk DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet finally out, players now have a chance to return to Unova and explore the new Blueberry Academy zone known as the Terarium. Following up on the base game of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet along with the previous Teal Mask expansion that came before, this new expansion provides one of the franchise’s most high-level challenges across its several hours. A new map and cast of characters with their own narratives are major parts of the DLC, but the most important aspect to many fans is the addition of new Pokemon to the game.

The Nintendo Switch line of Pokemon titles has sold remarkably well, but they’ve also proven somewhat controversial ever since Sword and Shield's exclusion of the National Dex. Prior to Gen 8, every Pokemon species that had ever existed at the time would be available, to varying degrees, in each mainline title. Scarlet and Violet made similar cuts to its initial Pokedex, but with the Teal Mask and now the Indigo Disk, many Pokemon from previous generations have found themselves brought back. There are several brand-new species including evolutions and variants, but the return of numerous classics is one of the DLC update’s most compelling features.

Why Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Two DLCs Use Teal and Indigo Colors

Though it's pretty obscure, a close look at various lore details may offer clues as to why Teal and Indigo are the colors of choice for the Gen 9 DLC.

Generation 1

While the base game’s Paldea Dex included some iconic members of the original 151 like the Gengar and Gyarados line, the Indigo Disk has brought back a huge chunk of the first Pokedex.

  • Bulbasaur
  • Ivysaur
  • Venusaur
  • Squirtle
  • Wartortle
  • Blastoise
  • Oddish
  • Gloom
  • Vileploom

Generation 2

The Pokemon of the Johto region Pokedex get some important appearances, but it already did have a fair bit of representation within the base game’s Pokedex. In line with the rest of the regions, the starters return across the Indigo Disk's Terarium biomes.

  • Chikorita
  • Bayleef
  • Meganium
  • Totodile

Generation 3

Giving Hoenn fans several of Gen 3’s stand-outs, the Indigo Disk represents this generation fairly well compared to the rest. The rare starters and Legendaries are predictable inclusions, but lines like those of fan-favorite Pokemon Metagross have been missed in Scarlet and Violet.

  • Treecko
  • Grovyle

Generation 4

The fact that Sinnoh's contributions to the Indigo Disk are limited solely to fossil Pokemon and final stage evolutions ends up seeming sparse. In truth, however, a fair number of Gen 4 species have already been available in both the base game and the Teal Mask's Pokedex.

  • Cranidos
  • Rampardos
  • Shieldon
  • Bastiodon
  • Rhyperior
  • Electivire
  • Magmortar
  • Porygon-Z

Generation 5

Considering that the Indigo Disk's Blueberry Academy is actually located in the Unova region, it's only logical that Gen 5's Pokedex brings one of the largest number of additions to the game.

  • Snivy
  • Servine
  • Serperior
  • Tepig
  • Pignite
  • Emboar
  • Blitzle
  • Zebstrika
  • Drilbur

  • Virizion
  • Reshiram
  • Zekrom

Generation 6

It may have ties to Scarlet and Violet as the start of the 3D era, but this relatively small Pokedex could use representation in a Kalos-focused Pokemon Legends game.

  • Espurr
  • Meowstic
  • Inkay
  • Malamar

Generation 7

It doesn't have the same presence as the older regions, but Alola still gets some surprise appearances from its roster. Special forms and Ultra Beasts never returned in the DLC.

  • Litten
  • Torracat
  • Incineroar
  • Popplio
  • Brionne
  • Primarina
  • Pikipek
  • Trumbeak
  • Toucannon
  • Dewpider
  • Araquanid
  • Comfey
  • Minior
  • Cosmog
  • Cosmoem
  • Solgaleo
  • Lunala
  • Necrozma

Generation 8

It already had some key representatives since the base game, but Galar gets a surprising lack of inclusion in the Indigo Disk. The main draw is Duraludon's new Archaludon evolution.

  • Milcery
  • Alcremie
  • Duraludon
