Highlights

  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Indigo Disk DLC promises a new set of legendary Pokemon, raising expectations even higher after the success of the first DLC.
  • The DLC introduces Blueberry Academy, a school known for its intense Pokemon battles, offering players challenging fights and the unique opportunity to battle two Elite Fours.
  • The DLC explores the contrast between Blueberry Academy, a futuristic and focused institution, and Naranja or Uva Academy, old and prestigious schools, providing players with a chance to experience the differences firsthand.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Indigo Disk DLC looks set to take the idea of old school vs. new school in a literal direction. With the ambitious DLC plans that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet has laid out, players should have plenty to look forward to. The first half of the DLC, The Teal Mask, already introduced fans to a new set of legendary Pokemon, so The Indigo Disk already has a high bar to clear, even before remembering what Sword and Shield's DLCs added to those games. The premise alone already gives Indigo Disk a good angle to work with, though.

With the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Teal Mask DLC, the Generation 9 games are growing even bigger. The Teal Mask took players to Kitakami, a land that the protagonist visits as a part of a school trip. Compared to the Spain-influenced Paldea, Kitakami is clearly based on Japan in terms of its style and culture, making it an interesting change of pace from the rest of the game. It also introduced players to Carmine and Kieran, who will also be in Indigo Disk as students of Blueberry Academy. What has been revealed about the Indigo Disk so far should give players a reason to be enthusiastic.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Blueberry Academy Should be an Interesting Contrast to the Main Game

The Indigo Disk will bring players to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Blueberry Academy, which seems set to be the focal point of the DLC's second half. Blueberry Academy is noted for its heavy emphasis on Pokemon battles, so players can likely expect a lot of challenging fights in the DLC. The academy's students have even created their own version of the Elite Four, creating a unique circumstance where players can battle two Elite Fours in the same game. It's stated that Blueberry Academy was only established recently, befitting its futuristic look, creating an interesting dynamic when paired with the game's main academy.

One of the narrative elements that sets Generation 9 apart is Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's academy and classes. Named either Naranja Academy or Uva Academy depending on the version, it's one of the more important locations in the game. It has several small storylines regarding the teachers in the academy, as well as exams for the player to pass. The academy is noted to be old and prestigious, as well as the largest school in the region. It features classes focused on all areas, including Pokemon Battles. By attending both, players will be able to experience the differences between both schools firsthand.

Depending on how Blueberry Academy is used in Indigo Disk, it could lead to some interesting territory. Whatever Scarlet and Violet's Indigo Disk may be hiding, it's sure to come out over the course of the DLC. One thing worth watching for could be how focused Blueberry Academy really is on battles, and how it compares to Paldea's academy. In addition, Blueberry having its own Elite Four also invites a natural chance for competition, with the player testing their own skills against Blueberry Academy's best. Exploring the relationship between the schools could also offer a chance to form some interesting new dynamics in the DLC.

Whether the player character attends Naranja Academy or Uva Academy, Blueberry Academy is likely to provide quite a contrast. There are still rumors about Scarlet and Violet's Indigo Disk DLC to wade through before its release, but it would be a disappointment to not bring any attention to the differences between the two schools. Naranja and Uva are both old schools that have managed to stand the test of time, while Blueberry Academy is new and cutting-edge, but largely untested. Indigo Disk is the perfect opportunity for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet to bring new meaning to the concept of old school vs. new school.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now for the Nintendo Switch.
