Highlights

  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are getting two expansions, The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk, which will improve the endgame system and introduce new critters and characters.
  • The expansions are likely to draw inspiration from previous DLCs and may include features like Galarian Slowking's evolution method from the Crown Tundra.
  • Fans speculate that Dipplin, a new cross-gen evolution, may have its own evolution or a Tera form in the expansions, and should watch out for new announcements.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are soon receiving two expansions in the form of The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk DLCs, which will take players to the faraway land of Kitakami and the Blueberry Academy, respectively. These expansions are likely to improve on the current endgame system for Gen 9 titles, all while adding new critters and returning ones to the mix, as well as multiple never-before-seen characters that will enrich the overall story of the games. It's also fairly probable that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk will both draw inspiration from the first DLCs in the history of mainline Pokemon games, with the latter being the perfect place to bring back one feature from Gen 8's Crown Tundra.

There are plenty of interesting concepts that Gen 8 DLCs explored, and several of them should make a return in some shape or form in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet or the franchise as a whole. A Pokemon Legends Unova game would also be a good place to start in order to mix and match the current gameplay formula with other experimental titles, but Gen 9 lends itself to see the return of a big Crown Tundra addition.

How Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Could Draw Inspiration From Galarian Slowking

Galarian Slowking and Slowbro In The Pokemon Anime

Pokemon Sword and Shield's Isle of Armor was not received as positively as its successor, but the interesting part was that it followed up on one of the base game's weirdest mysteries, it being Galarian Slowpoke. This critter first shows up for Pokemon Sword and Shield players at the Wedgehurst station, which is where they have to get the train to the Isle of Armor. Galarian Slowpoke is widely available throughout the island, and players can then evolve it into Galarian Slowbro by picking up Galarica Twigs, turning them into a Galarica Cuff, and giving it to Slowpoke.

The Crown Tundra DLC did something similar, as it allowed players to turn Galarica Twigs and turn them into a Galarica Wreath, which would then evolve Galarian Slowpoke into Galarian Slowking, instead. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Teal Mask is adding Dipplin, a new cross-gen evolution of another Gen 8 creature - Applin. As such, fans are wondering if Dipplin is going to be a one-time trick to pull or if Game Freak will draw inspiration from the Crown Tundra expansion and include a surprise for fans, which could take the shape of a Dipplin evolution, a new Tera form for it, or a different Applin evolution altogether.

The options are endless, and if Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's rumored Tera forms are confirmed, which seems to be the case after the Pokemon Presents trailer featuring two different forms of Terapagos, there's a chance that Dipplin could at least get one of them. Recently, a renowned Pokemon leaker by the name of Riddler Khu shared a picture of a caduceus, the medical insignia depicting the staff wielded by the mythological god Hermes, with two snakes entwining it. This could be a hint for what the Tera form for Dipplin could look like, with two critters coming out of the caramel apple.

Another possible route would be that Dipplin gets its own evolution in The Indigo Disk DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, but this could warrant questions as to why Appletun and Flapple from Gen 8 never evolved. The final option would be more akin to what happens in the Crown Tundra DLC, with the game featuring yet another Applin evolution that is entirely different from Dipplin or its Gen 8 siblings. This could even use a similar system, with players being tasked to gather resources to transform into evolution items. Regardless of what happens next, it's quite likely that Dipplin is meant to get some more love from Game Freak, and its fans should keep their eyes peeled for new announcements.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now for the Nintendo Switch.
