Shieldon and Bastiodon first appeared in Gen 4, and were exclusive to Pokemon Pearl. Over the years, it seems the Shieldon-line has remained a version-exclusive Pokemon just like its counterpart, Cranidos, although there have been some exceptions. In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, you can catch Shieldon and Bastiodon, but only if you have Pokemon Violet.

Since there aren't any fossils to be found in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, Cranidos and Shieldon appear as wild Pokemon for Gen 9's mainline game. The catch is that wild Shieldon only spawns in Terarium, the area exclusive to the Indigo Disk DLC. Fortunately, even if you don't have the expansion pass, you can still get the shield-dinos through other means.

Where to Find Shieldon in Pokemon Violet

pokemon violet indigo disk shieldon location

As long as you have completed "Victory Road," "Path of Legends," "Starfall Street", and the Teal Mask story, you can access the Indigo Disk DLC. However, the Indigo Disk's story mode will be locked off at a certain point until you complete "The Way Home," the final main/story quest of Scarlet/Violet. Fortunately, you can still catch Shieldon without having to be in the postgame.

You can find Shieldon in the Canyon Biome in Terarium/Indigo Disk, but only in Pokemon Violet. Specifically, Shieldon spawns on a mountain in the center of the Canyon Biome, which can be reached by heading east from the Canyon Plaza and the Canyon Rest Area. You can refer to the orange objective flag on the above image for the exact location.

Shieldon's level can be anywhere in the mid-50s to the mid-60s. Since you can only go to Terarium after you've done the three main stories, your Pokemon should be around its level - or higher. The easiest way to catch Shieldon is to sneak up on it and get a surprise/back throw. However, if you can't do this, then you'll need to catch it the old-fashioned way.

If you'd prefer to catch a lower-leveled Shieldon, you can find it as a 3-star Tera Raid Pokemon, but only in the Tera Raids of Terarium. 3-star Raid Pokemon are all level 35 upon capture. However, given the randomization of Tera Raids, this is a less-guaranteed method of catching Shieldon.

How to Get Shieldon in Pokemon Scarlet

pokemon home rampardos cranidos transfer

If you have Pokemon Scarlet and want to complete the Blueberry Pokedex, then you will need to get Shieldon. However, as stated, you can't find wild Shieldon or Bastiodon in Pokemon Scarlet, so that means you will have to trade for it, or you'll need to transfer one.

Shieldon can be transferred with Pokemon HOME. You can get Shieldon from the following:

  • Shining Pearl: Collect an Armor Fossil from the Grand Underground, and have it restored to a Shieldon at the museum in Oreburgh City.
  • Legends: Arceus: Catch a Shieldon from a space-time distortion in the Coronet Highlands.
  • Pokemon GO: Get Shieldon in the wild or by completing Research Breakthroughs. Research Breakthrough Pokemon will get shuffled over time, so it may be easier to look for Shieldon in the wild.

Here's how to transfer Shieldon to Pokemon Scarlet:

  1. In Shining Pearl or Legends: Arceus, place Shieldon in a PC Box or Pasture respectively, then save and exit out of the game.
  2. Open Pokemon HOME on the Switch, and then open Shining Pearl/Legends: Arceus to move Shieldon to HOME's storage/Basic Box. Save changes and exit.
  3. While still in HOME, open Pokemon Violet and place Shieldon in one of its PC Boxes.

If you're transferring from Pokemon GO, you'll do Step 3, only you'll have to transfer Shieldon in GO itself. Here's what to do:

  1. Open Settings on the main screen, then choose Connected Devices and Services. Choose Pokemon HOME.
  2. Find Shieldon, then select continue/next to transport it.
  3. Shieldon will be sent to the Pokemon GO storage in Pokemon HOME on Switch. Place it in a Basic Box, then move it to Pokemon Scarlet.

If you're trading, then you'll need to have a Nintendo Online Membership. With this, you'll be able to create or join Union Circles by generating a code in the Poke Portal or at the Union Circles at Pokemon Centers. Once you have a group, you can set out and start trading. Trading is done through the Poke Portal, and you'll want to choose Link Trade. Here, you can Set Code for whoever you're going to trade with - and vice versa.

If you're trading for a Shieldon, consider sending over a Cranidos in return . Cranidos is Pokemon Scarlet -exclusive.

How to Evolve Shieldon into Bastiodon

pokemon violet shieldon evolve

Shieldon evolves into Bastiodon when it reaches level 30. The Shieldon caught in Terarium - including Tera Raids - will be a higher level than 30, so just level Shieldon up one more time to get it to evolve. If you want to bypass evolving Shieldon, you can try to find Bastiodon in Terarium's 4-star Tera Raids instead.
