One Pokemon Scarlet and Violet fan has taken the looks of Gholdengo and Gimmighoul and given them a redesign that is more in line with the Gen 5 games. While Gholdengo and Gimmighoul are two of the new Pokemon introduced in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, this recent fan art proves that their looks fit in with one of the older art styles of the series.

While it might be hard to believe, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have been out for several months, giving players plenty of time to explore the open world of the Paldea region. During the adventure, players will inevitably come across many new Pokemon, such as the Ghost-type Gimmighoul and its evolution known as Gholdengo, a Steel/Ghost-type Pokemon. As their names suggest, these two creatures’ designs are influenced by gold.

Taking to Reddit, a user known as R3dd1t_D4v1d shared their reimagining of Gholdengo and Gimmighoul in the Gen 5 art style. In the image, the artist replaced the 3D appearances of the Pokemon from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet with 2D sprites. While the change gave the pocket monsters a more retro look, R3dd1t_D4v1d managed to maintain the significant design characteristic of Gimmighoul and Gholdengo in the transition. In addition to showcasing the new 2D sprites of the Pokemon, the artist animated them, adding some life to the scene. They even included Gholdengo’s gold surfboard in a segment of the clip.

It is worth pointing out that this Pokemon Scarlet and Violet fan art is not the only creation made by R3dd1t_D4v1d. In addition to redesigns of Gimmighoul and Gholdengo, the artist has reimagined other new Pokemon in the classic Gen 5 art style, which can be found on their Reddit page. For example, they recently posted a clip showing their Gen 5 redesigns of a number of Future Paradox Pokemon, such as Iron Treads, Iron Hands, and Iron Jugulis.

These recent pieces of fan art and others like them on the internet evidence the continued popularity of the Gen 5 art style. Even though Pokemon Black and White introduced Gen 5 in 2010, many gamers enjoy making artwork based on its classic style over a decade later, as these redesigns of Gimmighoul and Gholdengo show. It will be interesting to see what other Pokemon from the more recent games in the franchise get fan redesigns based on Gen 5 in the coming days.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available for the Nintendo Switch.
