Psychic Pokemon were absolutely brutal in Pokemon Red & Blue. The years haven’t been kind to Drowzee and Hypno, but Pokemon Scarlet & Violet players can still get some use out of the yokai-themed Pokemon.

In the original Pokemon games, Drowzee and Hypno served as a bulky alternative to the fast psychic type Alakazam. Unfortunately for them, many different psychic types have been introduced that fill that niche but with greater versatility or tankiness. They return in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, but where do they fit in? Here are all the key details on Drowzee and Hypno, including where to catch it and what it has to offer.

How to Catch Drowzee

Drowzee can be found and caught in South Province Areas Two, Three, and Five. The Pokemon is found in a few early-game areas such as the northeastern outskirts of Cortando, east of Mom’s house, and on the path between Mesagoza and Brassius. Here is the habitat page for Drowzee in the Paldean Pokedex:

How to Evolve Drowzee

Drowzee evolves into Hypno after hitting level 26. Players do not have to worry about jumping through any hoops to evolve Drowzee, as the gen-one Pokemon doesn’t need to be walked around like Rabsca or use a specific move like Primeape. Alongside this, players can go out and catch a Hypno without actually raising a Drowzee.

Hypno can be found in Area Zero as well as a handful of remote locations dotted across Paldea. Here are all the places where wild Hypno can be found:

Is Hypno a Good Pokemon?

Hypno is a decent Pokemon for the early portions of the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet story but is not particularly good elsewhere. The value for Drowzee is that it will likely be the first psychic-type Pokemon that players encounter, but there is no shortage of great alternatives available in the game. Hatterene, Gardevoir, Gallade, Bronzong, and others all out-pace Hypno.

The trouble for Hypno is that its stats are mediocre, outside an above-average Sp. Defense base stat. On top of that, it has a humble 483 total base stats. This is much less than the 525 enjoyed by Espeon or the 518 on Gardevoir.

The only conceivable use for Hypno is as a bulky support Pokemon, but with Scream Tail now legal in all formats it is largely useless. Players will need to get a Drowzee and Hypno to complete the Pokedex, but that’s about the extent of its usefulness.

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet are available now on Nintendo Switch.
