Terastallization is the new battle gimmick introduced in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. It greatly enhances the power of a specific type, with the twist being that Pokemon do not have to terastallize into their base type. This is how Mimikyu, which is typically a Ghost-type Pokemon, can terastallize into an Electric-type. As one might imagine, this can dramatically shift battles, forcing players to shake up their strategies in ways that they haven't needed to before in past Pokemon games.

It's unlikely that this gimmick will extend beyond Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, though that remains to be seen. Generally speaking, these Pokemon battle gimmicks have only lasted one generation before getting the boot, much to the disappointment of fans. Fans have particularly voiced their disapproval of Mega Evolutions going away after the Generation 6 Pokemon games, but Game Freak has given no indication that it plans on bringing them back in future games.

Future Pokemon games will likely introduce their own battle gimmicks, but in the meantime, fans can enjoy terastallization in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and its DLC. The first Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC is available now, though fans will have to wait a little bit longer to get their hands on The Indigo Disk expansion.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
