To say the Pokemon community has had fun with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s new starters would be an understatement. There is already a ton of speculation and fan art out there about them, with fans even designing their own versions of Fuecoco, Quaxly, and Sprigatito evolutions. Perhaps what’s most interesting is the general consensus shared by many fans.

For example, fan art often depicts Sprigatito as a Grass/Fairy, while many think Quaxly will adopt a more knightly appearance. If there is one evolution that has fans divided, it’s Fuecoco’s. Some believe Fuecoco’s final evolution will look like a Cucafera, while others believe Fuecoco will become a Fire/Ghost-type in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The evidence for both is compelling.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Fuecoco Fire/Ghost Evolution

One of the leading factors in this Pokemon Scarlet and Violet fan theory is Fuecoco’s design. Many agree that Fuecoco is a pepper, and following that logic, its design could eventually end up based on a Ghost Pepper. That’s not really much of a stretch, and with that logic, a Fire/Ghost typing would be perfect.

Furthermore, many believe Fuecoco’s white face will become more of a skull, perhaps adopting a more Day of the Dead-like appearance. This does hinge on the theorized Ghost Pepper design of Fuecoco, but it would make a lot of sense. In fact, there’s a lot of fan art out there where his face slowly evolves into a skull, and with matching bones, it would help fully realize the secondary Ghost typing. There’s a ton out there on this, but one example is seen below in Subjectively5’s fan art of Fuecoco.

Another potential hint at this is seen in Fuecoco’s name. The coco portion comes from the Spanish word for crocodile—cocodrilo—but it wouldn’t be the first Pokemon to have a double meaning in its name. Interestingly enough, Coco is a mythical ghost monster comparable to the idea of the bogeyman. This Coco is often associated with exaggerated fear and is said to make disobedient children disappear, which would be an interesting Pokedex entry. It wouldn’t even be the scariest Ghost-type entry on a Pokedex, either.

Now, which direction Game Freak takes Fuecoco is entirely up in the air. Fan hopes could be in line with the game developer’s direction, or they may be off in the left field. Ultimately, Fuecoco has proven to be an incredibly popular starter already and a solid evolutionary line could help seal that fate. Fans will just have to wait for Game Freak to show its hand when it comes to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
