Highlights

  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet may be the last expansion for Gen 9, but more unique events are expected to come to keep the game alive.
  • The departure from traditional Pokemon games in Gen 9 has also led to a shift in tone in the Pokemon anime, with new protagonists and critters taking the spotlight.
  • The upcoming Indigo Disk DLC could be the culmination of the story in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and a big distribution event, such as the introduction of Captain Pikachu, would be appreciated by fans.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have had a fair share of distribution events since launch, and while many of them haven't lived up to the expectations of players, there have also been a few interesting ones with competitively-built Pokemon or even Herba Mystica. With the upcoming release of The Indigo Disk DLC on December 14, The Pokemon Company will have to reveal whether this is the last expansion for Gen 9 as it seems to be, and if so, there should be even more unique events coming in the future to keep the game alive until future ones come out. While there's an argument to be made for more Legendary and Mythical Tera Raids, Gen 9 can have its own big distribution event, and it already has the perfect candidate for it.

Gen 9 marked a big departure from the series as players know it. Not only have Pokemon Scarlet and Violet broken multiple traditions, even big ones dating back to the first 1996 games, but they have also been the first time in over 25 years that the Pokemon anime shifted its tone massively. Ash and Pikachu's farewell in the Pokemon anime was a sad moment for many long-time fans, and now there are new protagonists and critters in the limelight for the animated series - and one of them should be part of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet likely still have plenty of life in them even after The Indigo Disk, and they should bring back one successful event.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Need a Captain Pikachu Distribution Event

Why Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Should Have a Captain Pikachu Event

After Ash and Pikachu's departure from the Pokemon anime, the series moved on with protagonists Liko and Roy and their respective "starters," Sprigatito and Fuecoco. While there are several other noteworthy characters, the anime included a bit of fan service with Friede, who is the trainer of a powerful Charizard as well as a peculiar Pikachu - Captain Pikachu. This Pikachu wears a sea captain hat and is often referred to as just "Cap," and while it's not the same as Ash's Pikachu, it does have enough screen time to be a prominent character.

Considering that Pokemon Sword and Shield featured a huge distribution event with a total of 8 different Pikachu, each with one of Ash's hats, it seems only reasonable to think that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will include their own Captain Pikachu distribution event. This kind of event would make a lot of sense for The Indigo Disk DLC's launch, as the Pokemon anime's story in Gen 9 is heading toward uncharted territory for the games, with Terapagos playing a big role in it.

All Ash Pikachu Versions Distributed in Gen 8

Tying the events of the anime with the game would be an interesting move for The Pokemon Company, and an in-game giveaway of Friede's Captain Pikachu would be a great way to do that - even if the character doesn't stay in a future Gen 10 series. Currently, there is no way to obtain the original Ash Pikachu forms distributed in Gen 8, as they were given away from September 2020 up until November 30 of the same year. These Pokemon included:

  • Original Cap Pikachu
  • Partner Cap Pikachu
  • Hoenn Cap Pikachu
  • Sinnoh Cap Pikachu
  • Unova Cap Pikachu
  • Kalos Cap Pikachu
  • Alola Cap Pikachu
  • World Cap Pikachu

Gen 8 was a good send-off for Ash and Pikachu in the anime, with them winning the Masters Eight Tournament, making Ash the most powerful trainer in the in-universe world. Although Captain is not as iconic, a distribution event for it would help it become more memorable ahead of the anime's ending or future chapters where it's still present. Either way, The Indigo Disk feels like the culmination of the story told in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Paldea and beyond, and a big distribution event to cap it off would be greatly appreciated by fans.
