Among the new critters introduced in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet are a handful of new flying-type Pokemon. Oftentimes flying-types get overlooked and are stuck being a first-route bird Pokemon that players encounter at the very beginning of their journey yet somehow keep as a valuable asset to their party to the very end. Pokemon Scarlet & Violet introduced a handful of new flying-types, all of which are uniquely designed and powerful.

6 Wattrel

Wattrel (1)

If players are keen on swimming through the Paldean seas, they've definitely encountered a flock of Wattrel flying overhead. Wattrel is certainly an adorable flying-type Pokemon, its design is simple, sweet, and slightly resembles a wide-eyed Taillow. All that said, it isn't the most powerful Pokemon on its own. Since it's a first-stage evolution, the only stat it excels in is speed.

Its special attack stat isn't dismal compared to some other first-stage evolution Pokemon, but Wattrel's low defense, attack, and HP stats outweigh the positives. Wattrel evolves into a significantly more powerful final-stage evolution at level 25, Kilowattrel. This evolution alone definitely makes Wattrel a worthy asset to any team that seeks a flying/electric-type.

5 Squawkabilly

Pokedex entry of Squawkabilly in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Squawkabilly is a normal/flying-type Pokemon that can be found in both the South and East Provinces in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Design-wise, this flying-type is certainly quirky. Squawkabilly can be found in four colors: green, white, yellow, and blue, all of which have a signature pompadour hairstyle.

The flying-type Pokemon isn't just unique in design, but also well-rounded when it comes to its stats. Squawkabilly excels in its speed and attack stats, while its defense and special attack stats pale in comparison. Since it doesn't evolve, Squawkabilly's stats remain middle-of-the-road, making it a decently well-rounded and formidable flying-type.

4 Flamigo

flamigo (1)

If players did a double take the first time they saw this Pokemon, don't worry, you're not alone. Flamigo is essentially a living lawn-flamingo, with the flying/fighting-type being on many player's teams simply because of its comically simple design. That said, Flamigo is well-rounded and can be quite the heavy-hitter when it comes to teams lacking offense.

Flamigo excels in its attack and speed stats, with its physical attack stat being well above average. Its other stats are extremely well-rounded, meaning that this Pokemon can both dish out hits and take them. Being a dual flying/fighting-type that unfortunately means that Flamigo is weak to flying, electric, psychic, fairy, and ice-type moves.

3 Bombirdier

bombirdier (1)

Many players first encounter Bombirdier when encountering the open sky titan in Paldea. The strong flying/dark-type Pokemon can also be added to player's teams when they encounter the avian deep into the South and West Provinces. Bombirdier doesn't evolve, so its stats are well-rounded as it is. The only stat it excels in is physical attack, with the remaining stats being balanced but average.

The flying/dark-type Pokemon resembles a stork, with its body shape, long, pink beak and slanted black eyes. The pouch it carries in its beak is a nod towards the myth that storks deliver babies that's often depicted in media and art. All in all, this Pokemon is well-rounded, creative from a design perspective, and the perfect addition to any player's team.

2 Kilowattrel

Kilowattrel (1)

When Wattrel hits level 25, it evolves into Kilowattrel. The sleek electric/flying-type Pokemon definitely resembles a Swellow when it comes to its body shape, but its simple yet electrifying design makes it easy for any trainer to love. When it comes to its stats, Kilowattrel is a speed demon. The electric/flying-type excels in its speed stat being well above average, with its special attack stat being nearly equally high.

Kilowattrel's remaining stats are average, but still make for a well-rounded Pokemon that can dish out fast, powerful hits. Because of its typing, Kilowattrel is only weak to rock and ice-types, making it have significantly fewer weaknesses than some of the other new flying types introduced in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet.

1 Iron Jugulis

Iron-Jugulis (1)

Iron Jugulis is easily the most powerful flying-type introduced in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Its Pokedex entry in Pokemon Scarlet describes that Iron Jugulis is the offspring of a Hydreigon and a robot, explaining its uncanny resemblance to the Generation V dark/dragon-type. Iron Jugulis doesn't retain its predecessors' dragon-typing, making it a dark/flying-type instead.

Although its dark/flying-typing makes it weak to fairy, electric, ice, and rock-type moves, Iron Jugulis' stats are the most powerful of any flying-type introduced in Generation IX. Iron Jugulis excels in special attack, but its speed and HP stats are equally above average. Its physical attack and defensive stats are balanced, making it the perfect formidable flying-type to any trainer's team.
