Pokemon Scarlet/Violet includes numerous Pokemon from previous generations in Paldea, and one of these happens to be Stantler, a Normal-type Pokemon from the Johto Region. Unfortunately, its mediocre base stats and learnset made it unreliable in the eyes of many competitive trainers. However, some trainers would disagree and say Stantler is a decent Pokemon and fully capable of battling when used properly.

In Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Stantler gained an evolution in the form of Normal/Psychic-type, Wyrdeer. Trainers were given a Ride Wyrdeer, but if they wanted one for battling, they'd need to go out and catch their own. Despite being a Gen 8 Pokemon, getting a Wyrdeer in Gen 9's Scarlet/Violet is not as simple as evolving Stantler in Legends: Arceus.

Updated November 20, 2023 by Renri Seong: Now that Pokemon Scarlet/Violet is compatible with Pokemon HOME, players can transfer Pokemon from Legends: Arceus, Sword/Shield, and more. When Scarlet/Violet was first released, Hisuian-exclusive Pokemon such as Wyrdeer were unobtainable. This is due to Wyrdeer's evolution requirements, which are impossible to "obtain" outside of Legends: Arceus. Now that Wydeer can be transferred, players may want to make room for it in their team. The following guide has been updated to include detailed information on getting Stantler and Wyrdeer in Scarlet/Violet.

How to Catch Stantler

best stantler location pokemon scarlet violet

Stantler can be found in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet at:

  • South Province (Area One)
  • South Province (Area Three)
  • South Province (Area Five)

It also has the chance of appearing as a 3-star Tera Raid boss. 3-star Tera Raids are unlocked once players obtain three Gym Badges. In addition, Pokemon found in 3-star Raids may have their Hidden Ability.

Fortunately, there are two fixed spawns guarantee a Stantler encounter. Both of these lie to the south of the eastern bridge out of Mesagoza. The best spot to find Stantler is the rocky bridge that links Area Five to Area Three. Trainers can run back and forth across the bridge to spawn more into existence (refer to above image for the exact location).

If players purchased the expansion pass, they can find Stantler in Kitakami (Teal Mask) at the following locations:

  • Reveler's Road
  • Mossfell Confluence
  • Timeless Woods
  • Kitakami Wilds

The Stantlers in Kitakami will be around level 14, but if players are going to Kitakami during the postgame/after "The Way Home" main quest, its level will be elevated to aroundlevel 58. The only exception to this rule are the Stantlers in the Timeless Woods. Unlike the rest of Kitakami, Timeless Woods Pokemon are always at a higher level, around mid-50s even if players haven't unlocked the postgame.

Can You Get Wyrdeer in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet?

pokemon legends arceus wyrdeer

Trainers won't be able to get Wydeer unless they evolve their Stantler in Legends: Arceus or trade with someone who has a Wyrdeer. In Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Stantler could evolve into Wyrdeer after it used the move Psyshield Bash 20x in the Agile Style. Since Agile and Strong Styles do not exist in Scarlet/Violet's gameplay, it's impossible to evolve Stantler in Paldea.

Furthermore, Stantler cannot learn Psyshield Bash by leveling up in Gen 9. The only way to get a Stantler with Psyshield Bash is to transfer a Stantler from Legends: Arceus, or use a Mirror Herb and have it learn the move from a Wyrdeer in Scarlet/Violet, which ultimately defeats the purpose since the goal is to get Wyrdeer.

How to Evolve Scarlet/Violet Stantler in Legends: Arceus (How to Get Wyrdeer)

If Scarlet/Violet players intend on evolving their own Stantler, they're going to need a copy of Legends: Arceus. Here's what to do:

  1. Place Stantler in a PC Box in Scarlet/Violet, then Save and close out of the game.
  2. Open Pokemon HOME on Switch, and choose Scarlet/Violet.
  3. Move Stantler from the PC Box to a Basic Box/Pokemon Storage in HOME. Save and exit.
  4. Now, open up Legends: Arceus in Pokemon HOME, and move the Stantler to one of the Pastures. Save and exit.
  5. Close out of HOME and start up Legends: Arceus.
  6. Place Stantler in the party (Note: Stantler learns Psyshield Bash at level 21, and masters the move at level 31. Meaning, players will need to get its level to 31 in order to use Agile/Strong Style).
  7. Use Stantler in battle, and choose to use the * Agile Style of Psyshield Bash.
  8. Once it's ready, evolve it, then place it back in a Pasture. Save and exit out of Legends: Arceus.
  9. Open up HOME again, and go into Legends: Arceus to move the newly-evolved Wyrdeer from the Pastures to the Basic Box. Save and exit.
  10. While still in HOME, open up Scarlet/Violet to return the Wyrdeer back to Paldea. Save and exit.
  11. Start up Scarlet/Violet on the Switch menu, and Wyrdeer should be in whichever PC Box it was deposited in.

* When using Agile Style Psyshield Bash , it's recommended to go to an area that has lower-level Pokemon , such as the Obsidian Fieldlands or Crimson Mirelands . This will give Stantler more of a chance to use its attack without the risk of being KO'd.

If players don't care about their Stantler/Wyrdeer's Trainer ID, then they can just catch and evolve a Stantler (or catch Wyrdeer in a massive mass outbreak) in Legends: Arceus and transfer it to Scarlet/Violet using steps 8-11.

Be warned that this method will classify Stantler/Wyrdeer as a "Traded Pokemon," meaning it won't obey the Scarlet/Violet trainer if they don't have enough Gym Badges. However, since Stantler gains move mastery for Psyshield Bash at level 31, it's not a bad idea for trainers to have at least 4 Gym Badges just to be safe.
