A Pokemon Scarlet and Violet player has captured a clip of the heartbreaking moment in which they miss an opportunity to catch a Shiny Voltorb before it disappeared forever. Pokemon Gold and Silver first introduced Shiny Pokemon back in 1999, creating a number of trainers looking to fill their Pokedex with the rarer version of the Pokemon, but this Pokemon Scarlet and Violet player may be too unlucky.

Reddit user DaRealFeels recently shared a Pokemon Scarlet and Violet clip in which the trainer is battling a Shiny Voltorb with a Paldean regional variant of Tauros when a Great Ball capture attempt fails. While Shinies have remained a persistent theme, Pokemon Sun and Moon also started the tradition of regional variants for the Alolan Pokemon region and these alternate forms have become a staple of the franchise since, including with Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Each title typically offers one regional variant per Pokemon, but Pokemon Scarlet and Violet changed that format with Tauros getting three new breeds in celebration of the real-life area of the Mediterranean that the map is based on.

DaRealFeel's Pokemon Scarlet and Violet video begins with their Tauros using the Dark-type move Assurance on the Shiny Voltorb that swaps its red top for a blue one that more effectively separates the Gen 1 Pokemon from a Poke Ball. The Voltorb's health drops to nearly half as a result of the move, and it responds with an Electric-type move Electro Ball which barely phases the Pokemon trainer's Tauros. Failing an attempt to catch the Shiny Voltorb with a Great Ball after contemplating the use of an Ultra Ball, the enemy Voltorb got its next move which it used to Self-Destruct, knocking itself out to avoid capture.

Given that the Self-Destruct move kills any Pokemon using it, the Voltorb's move choice simultaneously lowered its health to zero and ended the battle, leaving no moves for DaRealFeels to throw another Great Ball. The level 26 Shiny Voltorb wouldn't have been the first version of the Pokemon that DaRealFeels has caught in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet according to the indicator next to its name, suggesting that the Pokemon fan specifically wanted a shiny. The unfortunate moment clipped by DaRealFeel shows the resilience of Shiny Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and may go to show that there's no cause for celebration just because a shiny has been encountered.

As many Pokemon Scarlet and Violet fans expressed their entertainment or lamentation in response to DaRealFeel's video, one recommended saving the game before beginning a battle with a Shiny Pokemon to prevent similar future occurrences. While multiple Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players pointed to the special Poke Ball type called the Quick Ball as another solution, some simply appreciated DaRealFeel's choice of nickname for their Tauros.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now for Nintendo Switch.
